there is oil in it................. even topped it up a little, but still nothing!

Hi everyone. Just been checking the oil on my Range Rover (P38) and the dip stick isn't registering ANYTHING !!:eek: When I first pull it, there is plenty of oil on it. I give it a wipe, re-dip fully and pull backout, but it's as dry as when I wiped it !!! The oil light is working...
