Hi everyone.

I’ve recently bought a 2001 Land Rover Defender 90, and after having a more thorough look at the chassis, I’m starting to think it might be a little worse for wear in some areas. It has 11 months of MOT and had no advisories on the MOT for corrosion and overall in most areas, the rust is superficial. However there are a couple of small areas such as the passenger side bulkhead and steering damper area, the rust has gone through. What do you all think of this? I’m hoping it can just be a little welding job there and then. (which isn’t a problem for me!)

If you are in the UK, hope you’re enjoying the lovely bank holiday weather today! 😎

The picture of the rear end with the tubular outrigger looks a bit crispy. It’s either been a bit neglected or it’s been in the sea

Or both!
That is incredibly rusty, hopefully you didn't pay a great deal of money for it.
I would also take a wild guess it doesn't have a proper mot on it.

MOT no advisories! Yea right, not a proper mot.
If you can yourself a good tap around with a little hammer will soon show up any serious issues. If not take to someone who can. Quite a bit of crusty stuff down there, spring pan by exhaust looks poor. You could be lucky with this one and have caught it in time to be saved.

Photo 2180-2183 you can probably neutralize more rust growth with some rust corrosion spray. renew suspension and steering steering components. Sand blast the chassis. cut and re-weld any severely rusty brackets. Undercoat the undercarriage.

You can save the chassis, axle, differential from what I see.

My 2p worth. Your chassis looks ok from the photos you have posted, and nothing a cup wire brush and some decent rust converter and paint won’t sort, or extend the life of. Apart from the tube outriggers. They’re almost toast and won’t last much longer. They are not a huge issue to replace though. The footwell at the bottom doesn’t look too bad. Again wire brush treat and paint. That hole looks to be at the top corner of the footwell and defo needs to be cut out and new metal welded in. I would try and determine why it’s ended up rotten though and fix that, as you obviously have water ingress somewhere and if you don’t deal with that you’ll just get rot again. I wouldn’t despair though. It’s all fixable.
