Hi Guys again . OK so I have changed the Crankshaft position sensor for a new one after a bit of a struggle doing the job with the starter motor in place but it's done , come to start the motor and it started up ok and several times after but I took it for a test drive today and the motor is running rough with not a lot of power and I'm getting black smoke out of the exhaust . I'm sure I didn't change anything else whilst I was doing the job so suggestions please .

Have you dislodged or split a boost pipe when doing the job?

Well spotted , After I came back from a test drive and then stated the rough running and smoke I hadn't actually lifted the bonnet before I came on the forum . Now I've been under the bonnet low and behold the Intercooler pipe had blown off due to a dodgy jubilee clip so now it has a fresh clip and seems to be ok . When I was looking for problems regarding the bad starting I was not looking forward to changing the Crankshaft position sensor because of where it is positioned . I did decide to leave the starter motor in place and with the aid of an endoscope and torches managed the job ok . Thanks to everyone who helped with suggestions and advice .

Hi guys
After the car starting and running well for a week it had a wobbler and wouldn't start . Yes the motor spun over fine and occasionally seemed like it would start , but no . Next morning tried it again and it started . Then next day tried it again and it started . It's not easy to trust the car when you don't know if it will start or not . Should I now change the Camshaft sensor or could anyone suggest something else other than scrapping the car all together . I have said before that both my wife and I love driving it and I have put a fair amount of time and money into it so it's a difficult decision . What do you think .

I've just had a thought about the low pressure sensor in the fuel pipe under the bonnet could that have a problem . The sensor attached to the left inner wing .

On an F1 TD4, I’d have gone for the camshaft sensor first, like I mentioned in post #16.
A faulty one will give starting issues.

Hi , so did changing the Camshaft sensor cure your problem . If you read my thread did you have similar symptoms .
Thanks so much for trying to help .

I had starting issues on my F1, especially when the engine was warm. It would ‘crank’ but not ‘fire’ for prolonged periods. I bought a cheap cam sensor and it solved the issue.
The ‘cheap’ sensor failed after about 6 months, so I then bought a decent one (lesson there for you)! It’s still going strong now - my daughter has it.

See this (3:33 for cam sensor)…

Sounds like you got it sorted with a bit of luck . I originally thought it seemed like fuel starvation and that's why I went down the route of new fuel pump and main filter . I will order an original Land Rover sensor and fit that . Problem these days it's difficult to know where anything is made . The Crankshaft sensor has BMW on it but the packaging says china and this came through our local car shop . Thanks again .

Probe it first and see if the signal looks correct, before ordering.
IIRC, you are looking for something like 1-5v at cranking, but you’d need to check that.

Mine was about 0.03!

Hi Mark . Thanks for adding more info . What does IIRC mean and when you say cranking do you mean without the engine actually running and is there a particular plug pin to connect to and then earth .

Who is Mark!?!

Cranking is the engine turning over before ‘firing’ and running… the ‘wer’ bit of Wer, wer, wer, wer, wer, wer, vroom!

IIRC = If I Recall Correctly…

If you watch the video I posted, it shows you the 3 wires. One is the 12v supply (you don’t want that one). One is the earth and one is the signal wire back out.
