:vb-doh:

And I bet that's all a lot steeper than it looks in pics.

If I want to hire a camper, how drunk will I need to be, so I can pass the dumbass test to get one?
Just tell 'em you drive a Land Rover - they'll know your mad enough ;)

Yeh, its frikin steep there. He really was lucky, could have gone right over the cliff. I've lost the brakes on my D1 on roads out that way.

There are numerous signs saying campervans and the like should not go down this road, well if you can call it a road, its barely a track. He's come off of it and become a passenger. The signs really should not be needed - common sense should prevail.

That camper has only just got back on the road and still isn't perfect.

Was a great day in the office today...

I'm not one who likes stopping much when I'm driving, like to get to where I'm going. But today I just had to stop and snap that pic. Unfortunately the crappy camera in my phone didn't do the scene anywhere near justice, it was awesome. It looks like I'm in shade, but it was gloriously sunny, as was all the way up to the mountain and the definition of the mountain and bush in real life was stunning. It's Mount Hutt, the biggest ski field in the region, season closed a few weeks now though.

Had to stop a few Ks down the road again to snap another pic...

Once again, the pic does not do the scene justice, but a bit better. The river is the Rakaia as it breaks through 'the gorge' before it expands out again into a wide braided river. 30k to the east the only other bridge over it is well over a mile long. Great Salmon river to. ;)

Today was supposed to be the 2nd day of my weekend. However, on Friday I air freighted a fridge down to Queenstown for 1 of our contractors to fit into a camper that had a fridge that had packed a sad. However, when he came to fit it.... it was the wrong one! So much for going by the van's documentation. So today one had to be taken down to Tekapo to drop off with the fella. no other sod would do it, so I swapped my day off for Wednesday and, while I'd have preferred to get on with stuff at home, had a lovely drive out.

Its a 2 1/2 hour drive down to Tekapo. The first half is dead boring... a virtually dead straight drive down SH1 to Rangitata. From then on, its one of my favourite drives through Geraldine, Fairlie, through MacKenzie Country to Lake Tekapo. Its a great drive in the Freelanders, the best was in my son's Rover 220 Tomcat, and is funnily enough a good drive in a manual camper. Today's chariot though was a 2.7 2000 Toyota Hiace mini van with 450+ K on the clock and a gearbox unwilling to let the engine challenge the hills and twisty roads... a very frustrating drive.

On the way home, when I got to Geraldine, I took the 'inland scenic route' that skirts along the foothills and edge of the mountains through Mayfield, Windwhistle, Glentunnel etc. Adds 20 minutes to the journey, but a lovely road, where I took those pics.

Had to call the police today to stop 1 of our campers/customers.

We've had a customer complaining the brakes on the camper he's rented are really bad. So we tries to book him in to a garage to get them looked at. We managed to get him in to 1 and he had a row with the guy there and drove off. Tried to get him into other places and he was having none of it because it would upset his travel plans, but still complaining the brakes are bad. I speak to him on Wednesday and tell him this is stupid, you have to get into a garage, I can book one in Nelson tomorrow with a garage we regularly use and they're very good, I can get all the parts to them. So he agrees. I get together discs & pads, I also put in some ABS sensors and rings because he's also been saying the stability control was playing up and got them overnight couriered. Hoped the calipers are serviceable.

Gets a phone call from the garage Thursday... where's your customer? I manage to speak to the customer on Friday, he's travelled 75 miles south of Nelson. He says the brakes are OK now. I tell him, you must go back to Nelson, I've spoken to the garage and they will see you today. OK he says, then changes his mind. I'm completely frustrated at this point. Tell him to sit tight and I'm going to call him again shortly. I'm about to call him back, and I see from the tracker that he's on the move again south.

I check the tracker this morning and he's gone over to the West Coast and is crossing the Southern Alps coming up Otira towards Arthurs Pass. Which means once he passes Arthurs, he's got to come down one of the longest steepest descents in the country. I immediately email him - tell him to stop in Arthurs Pass and call me. I call him 5 times. No answer. So I made a 111 emergency call to the police, asked them to stop the van!

Then called a tow company to go get the van. Madness.

You gotta love dealing with the public. 🤣

You gotta love dealing with the public. 🤣
Its been a mad 3 days. I've had to deal with this episode and at the same time another van that has a type of handbrake that makes it easier to get to the back from the front of the van. When you engage it, it then goes floppy and the handle will go back down to the floor. To release it, you pull it back up, put a bit of pressure on it, then press the button and lower it.

Its different - but easy to use.

Had a couple pick up 1 of these vans. Few days later, they call saying they can't release the handbrake. We do get calls like this and I tell them its not broken, just go through the process and it will release. They are adamant its broken. I tell them its not, but they don't believe me, I ask them to try again. This may go on for 20 minutes! Then all of a sudden they have released the hand brake.

Anyway, this one that called a week or so ago was answered by someone who obviously didn't want to put the effort in and just called a mechanic, who released it - just the normal way, no mechanicery required. Customer had to wait a lot longer than 20 minutes and we had a bill to pay.

They called back again Thursday, they can't release the hand brake. This time I answered it. They said its like before, I said yes and the guy came along and released it without having to fix anything. We go through the sequence of they say its broke, I say its not. In the end, even I got fed up with them and said, right I'll call a mechanic, but we will bill you if they release it without having to fix anything. So I calls a mechanic. He goes along and I get a call from him. Yeh, released the hand brake no problem, but the ABS lights are lit on the camper can we take it to our workshop and read the codes. Yes I says. He calls back a bit later... read the codes, cleared them, but they come back. So now its a warranty claim - the van is virtually brand spanking, only the 2nd hire, probably about 7k kms on it. So I ring the local VW dealership in Wellington and book it in. Then rings the customer back and ask them to take it to the dealers. No they say, its not safe! What! I ask, you have been driving it, why not now? Because the ABS is lit. But these lights have not just come on, they must have been on when you got to your campsite? No, they came on when the mechanic came. FFS, I don't believe that for 1 minute.

So I calls VW Roadside Assist, tells them we have a Crafter 50 that is booked in under warranty at a dealer, can they tow it please. Hang on they say, will call back. They calls back... No, Crafter 50 has an exemption from towing, its to heavy. FFS. So I call a tow truck, get them to shift it 11km on Friday morning.

Anyway, the dealer looked at it and comes back to me that the RH brake shoes have collapsed within the hub taking the ABS sensor out. Probable reason, being driven with the hand brake on.

Dealer tells me its been driven with the hand brake on, customer denies this, and denies the ABS was lit before the mechanic arrived.

This is obviously on going and I don't really know how helpful we should be. On the 1 hand they are a customer with a problem so we should help them, but I'm sure they have caused the problem, which has already cost us with tow & mechanic bills. I've told them it's possible the camper won't be fixed until Thursday and sounded them out on getting a plane up to Auckland to pick up another camper, but they say that is not an option.

So I've had these, together with all the day-to-day calls about missing power cables, electrics cutting out, how long will the batteries last, doors not closing, doors not opening etc and my 'day job' of checking the campers are OK before going out on hire. Was a 12.5 hour shift today... its why you lot have had my rant :D
