I got this by putting a sports exhaust on it. Improved fuel consumption too. But, yep, it did have to be bought and I fitted it. Stainless though so should last.

Thanks but I was not 'messing around' with it, I was following a tried and tested method which works well and many Defender owners do this. The steps were taken from a renowned Land Rover expert - It's nothing new. When these vehicles were built they weren't really set to maximum performance but I am very aware of any possible pitfalls like head gaskets, overheating and the like so I am not 'really worried' at all. I just want to know if anyone else had issues after mods during MOTs, that's all. The pump, injectors and timing are fine. If I wanted it reset I could easily put it back myself to what it was but thank you for your time.They have a throttle stop which is a threaded bolt you wind in and out.
If you have been messing around with your injection pump you will have seen this.
Wind it in so it will only do 2000rpm if you are worried. If you are really worried then you shouldn't have messed around with your pump.
You would have been better of getting the pump and injectors refurbed and the timing set.
We did this on the 200tdi and it goes really well and made a big difference.

The top screw and star wheel can both effect off boost fuel delivery, hence why it feels better to drive, but as it is off boost the fuel is not being fully burnt hence your smoke.
You will find most adjustments everlap others so it can take quite some fiddling to get nice power and minimal smoke.

What sticker is that? I don't think I have one. Won't they use set parameters rather than check the stickers? I don't know, just guessing. At least I don't have one but that's an interesting point. Always passes the mot, trick is to remove the sticker under the bonnet, no sticker means mot man has to use max figures (3 I think?) rather than the lower ones on the sticker.
Well I guess it all depends on your mot tester, put it in for a mot and see what happens or book it in for a emissions test. Excessive smoke, at least for road use. But you do get more power. Anyone who says you don't gain with smoke has not done an testing. All you have to do is look at diesels in motorsport where they aren't regulated to not smoke.Should turn it down till it stops smoking anyway, dont gain with black smoke just waste diesel

I have a pic I will find and post up, mine was white approx 30mm square with blakc letters saying something like 1.30.
Take it somewhere else. My local garage is a Land Rover specialist and they never do this to old Land Rovers when they MOT them.I had a memo from my MOT centre last year and the said that they will run the engine at high revs for a prolonged period and could take responsibility for any issues. This did worry me at the time. Tickover was the norm once as you say. I'm sure they're trying to wreck engines.

Thank's for the link but mine's a 300tdi. I spent a long time watching videos andb learning how to do this mod which would give me a bit more power, thought carefully about anything I did. I know all the possible fitfalls and what can be done to mitigate them too. Yes, all the pumps on the 300tdi of that year use the same pump as far as I know but any work I do I always make sure they are talking about the same pump as I have. Everything is fine with what I have done so far along with the necessary gauges. I didn't go overboard as some have with wastegate and main fuel scew etc but I now have a great increase in power which is enough for me. I also have a light clutch and amazing braking too! Something which I thought I'd never achieve on a Defender. I just wish they would stop interfering with test procedures in the name of this climate scam. I am going to contact my MOT station re the high revs with no load and wait and see if it passes. I may have to revert the procedure if it doesn't. No one has come back and said they did the same work and had no issues with the MOT so I still have no idea on that question. Not sure if pumps are the same
They did have EGRs but removing that was the first thing I did. Awful things.On the wastegate thing. I blanked off the pipe from turbo to wastegate thinking I will get a bit more boost - but no difference at all - and I measure boost on the top intercooler hose. I get 1 bar at full throttle and at best there felt like the wastegate was wanting to open at the 2700 mark and that small "flat spot" has disappeared.
It could just have been my imagination as well.
