When i bought my S2 they had practically no seal left so i would get a cold draft even when shut. I fitted new seals and found it hard to close them. Fitting new seals might remove any loose play.

The oily mess all over the box may well have blown back from the engine bay. You need to do a good clean up/pressure wash. Can see an oil dribble from the selector area. there are seals on those shafts that can be replaced, just a few bolts to...

Is there a clutch pedal return spring? Could it be missing or worn? The brake pedal on my 101 was reluctant to return until i fitted a new spring.

Clean the oil off. That might be several years worth of gunk.
