The heater in a Defender, when working ok and properly sealed, is sufficient for the UK climate. Using Vaseline on door seals stops the doors from sticking to frozen seals and a good radiator muff like the exmoor trim one helps.

Don’t just paint with the likes of hammerite, it won’t last. The best bet is as above, shot blasted, zinc coated and then painted. The steps are exposed to salt and muck from the road so need doing properly.

get them shot blasted and hot dip galvanised before re-painting and you wont have the issue again?

Just had my renewal with flux and paid the same as last year.
