Don't know about the vd struts, but on the standard ones the strut only turned so far hence being handed. With the strut bolt a 2ft breaker bar and as much weight as you can put on it is close (so ft tight!)

I'd go for an air lock aswell🤔 How was the system bled? There are way to many things on a lot of engines with their own coolant pipes and air locks are a nightmare sometimes to get rid of 🤬

Others will know better than I, but an airlock is a possibility as is a faulty heater control valve.

Yes old school lol. Might be a right angle drive behind the Speedo , they can get a bit dry giving same fault.
