Have done the engine change on my 90 for the 3.9 v8 efi with the zf 4 speed auto have just had new pipes to oil cooler and from empty put 9.8 lts of fluid in and selected drive but nothing??? And same for reverse and 1,2,3. Was wondering is there a switch on the foot brake to allow it to engage? Took engine and box from a running disco so I know it works! Any help would be helpful thanks in advanced

Was the box and torque converter completly drained as that's a lot of ATF if is wasn't.
Some spec discos have a switch that only allows you to move from (P) when the brake pedal is pressed. You don't have the transfer box in (N) do you?

This has been copied from Ashcroft's site.

I have just fitted a reconditioned ZF autobox. I have filled the box with the correct amount of oil but have no drive at all, forward or reverse. Why?

The first thing to do is to remove the oil cooler pipe from the bottom of the gearbox (put a container under the open end to catch the oil) and start the engine. You should get a good flow of oil. If not the pump has been broken during installation and will need replacing/rebuilding. The torque convertor must be fitted to the gearbox, located correctly on the pump and locked into postion before the gearbox is offered to the engine, otherwise damage will occur to the pump, resulting in no oil flow and subsequent to other parts of the autobox
.

Ok thanks will try this later, sure it was empty as I drained all fluids to replace with new (service) yeah tranny box is in H. My work van is auto and only goes in gear from pressing the break pedal unless rolling so can I tow then select a gear or will this F*** it up? Also do you check level when running or off? Sorry for all the questions but I am young and wanting to learn as I have become a landy owner for life.

Check the level when coldbut engine running by moving the select from (P) click by click ti (1) then back and then check the level on the dip stick somewhere between the two dots not below or above.
Japanese and NAS spec discos have this interlock it's also on the transferbox.

hope iam wrong but you may have broken the drive
tabs of the oil pump when refiting the tork converter

Yeah pump has gone how much is a pump or can I repaire it? Or is it worth getting new box from eBay will it make much effort to change to manual?

I have a box with a good pump you can have cheap if you want it but I am in Hampshire

Beware of dirt in the box after work like this, the detergent in the oil can stirr up all the old **** and cause blockages, mainly with the govenor.

Got a box now but thanks for the offer having real trouble putting the torque converter in the box how do u know if it is on the pump tabs correctly? Then how do you offer the box up to engine without the torque converter moving? Is any1 in the area and wishes to lend a hand?

your too far from me mate sorry.

once its located by wiggeling it backand fourth untill it clunks in you need to lock it in place with some wood throught the bell houseing access hole. dont let it move!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have got the box in and torque convertor in it's a right bi**h I won't be doing that again in a hurry. I have connected every thing back up and it drives back and forward so very happy :) I done the coca cola advert as I drove up my road as it has NO exhaust at all and every1 turned there light on to look out the window, good thing bout v8's you can hear them coming ;-)
