Hi, I'm intending to replace the XY switch in my 2002 TD5 Disco ES and I see that there's a special tool required, is there a way around this as it's quite expensive or maybe it's possible to rent it from somewhere. Anyone changed an XY switch, any advice?

Yes,dont bother.Until it has been on Testbook for an accurate diagnosis you are wasting money on expensive parts.The WXYZ switch is over £100,and sounds like its not what is wrong.If it fails to give a pausible signal in use all that happens is the EAT ecu will go into limphome mode - stick in one gear.
A decent independant should check it out for less than £50,at least you will then know what is actually wrong.

I've taken it to an independant Landy garage for a check up and the diagnostics machine claims all is fine with both the engine and gearbox. He said to change the loop under the rocker if there was a trace of oil by the ECU. All changed because there were a few traces but not much. How about the pipes to the turbo (wastegate) could that be a cause?

I also had a leak in the footwell for some time and from what I understand this switch is below the footwells.

Problem still happening (static speeds are fine but when needing welly for overtaking or roundabouts the car seems to get confused about which gear, automatic, to be in and sort of jerks around a bit but moving up speed normally is fine), changed loop under rocker, changed MAF filter, changed fuel filter, changed gearbox oil (twice to get the trapped stuff out), changed gearbox filter, changed air filter and turbo wastegate is fine, diagnostics test brings up no faults either. Just spoke to another mechanic who reckons it's the "diesel pump", could be as it's pretty grimey around that area. Can't seem to find one on ebay, if this could be the problem does anyone know the part number?

Once again - test,dont just replace parts,fuel pumps are expensive.The fuel pressure measured at the pressure regulator should be a steady 4 bar,58psi all the time the engine is running.
