Hi,

For a project I'm doing at school I'm researching how to write a user manual for the 90, 110 and Defender. I want it to be for people who are buying a Land Rover for the first time and know very little about them. I know there are manuals already out there but what sort of things do you think I should include in it?

Thanks!

- Stuff to check when buying, transfer box, service history, rust etc.
- Stuff that is easy for someone to do and commonly goes/needs doing, UJ's, cam belt, brakes, swivels, intercooler cleaning, head gasket, full service (gearbox oil, transfer box oil, diff oil, fuel and air filters, coolant)
- Tools that are useful to have

On the first page paragraph 1, you should ask the question are you wealthy?if the answer is No, then do you know how to use spanners, if the answer is No again then shut the manual and buy a sensible vehicle.

Any thoughts on what data to include (E.g. Engine bhp, mpg etc.)?

You could do the different engine variants and then give some data on them, as well as an overview such as tdi- more reliable but less powerful, td5 more powerful but less economical etc.

Maybe even a section on how to identify the different models

That's easy

BHP........Some

MPG.......Yes (unless it's a V8 in which case the correct answer is nearly)

Are you going to pick a year/model/engine? Or is it going to be more generic?

A user manual usually contains basic specs, service schedule and driver info. For a Fender I'd have thought some explanation of proper use of diff lock was essential and perhaps some basic off-road driving techniques.

Pointing out where all the blurdy oil drips out and how to put some back in would be good

It's going to be generic, covering all 90, 110 and Defenders from 1983 to 2015. Off-road driving techniques is a great idea :)

First question should be to any new owner. Why haven't you bought a Land Cruiser?

Next section

Is it important that you complete your journey?

Do you enjoy the concept of rusty bolts and drilling out broken ones?

Is this for an Extended Project Qualification by any chance?

I had to Google that! (I'm middle aged with no kids, and I don't think we have them up here anyway!)

What's in the manual would depend on whether it's intended as a version of the manufacturers manual or as a separate, independent publication. The manufacturer doesn't really cater for the used buyer so focuses on driving tips and where controls are, and they certainly won't include common faults! If you can give us a bit more detail we might be able to help better.

PS, I'd love to see the result!

Bonus points for knowing the difference between a 90/110 and a Fender

Engine specs are going to be a waste of time as there's something like 10 over that period without thinking too hard. Maybe a sentence or two on each with known strengths/weaknesses

I'd probably focus on the things that are more unique, basic maintenance, where to top up oils/fluids/grease and understanding the drive train because that's where they differ from most vehicles.

Driver instructions explaining the use of hi/low box and diff lock along with very basic off-road (crossing a ditch, up/down slopes, simple wading)

A trouble shooting guide again probably focusing on drive train (stuck in diff lock/ broken halfshaft etc)

Basic common mods if you want to turn it into a book or possibly trilogy :D
