When I got my landy I was gobsmacked how poo the heater was even in the summer!
So I adjusted the cables which made it a bit better, then I changed the expansion tank bottle lid which made a huge difference, a few weeks later I flushed the coolant and got a quite a good heater.
But I then started to notice a fain't smell of coolant so last night I changed the matrix and found this.....

This morning, for the 1st time since I bought it, I turned the heater down as it was far too hot! What a difference.
So for the grand total of about 50 quid to do it all my heater is awesome and I would recommend anyone with a rubbish heater to have a go. Not the easiest job in the world to get it off but worth it in the end!

I wish mine was like that. I have gone through three thermostats. two of them the 88 degree ones, flushed the system, New heater matrix, Stripped the fan box to make sure all the cables were working and flaps opening as they should. New rad and intercooler. Sealed up all the gaps around the doors, Tried running with a Kenlowe electric fan, Rad muff, went back to a new Visco's fan, fitted an electric ceramic heater, and the heating is still useless. IN the end the most successful thing I have done was to buy myself a new coat scarf and gloves.

That's mad! What kind of driving do you do? I wonder if that has any impact on it? Mine is like warm after 2 miles or so of city driving but stinking hot after the same distance on the a roads and motorway

After about 10 miles the temperature gauge moves half way and lukewarm air starts to come through. That's driving along French D roads Country roads. I can start the engine up and leave it ticking over for 20 minutes and its still cold. I once took the Visco's fan off and drove it in 38c for almost three hours. It was only when I was going up a long hill that the temp started moving towards the red. I'm told 200 tdi's are cool running engines which ain't much help when temperatures can fall to -18c

That's very Impressive! That's the only Defender I've heard of that does that. Don't change the main radiator ;) :)

I did that a few months back!!

I'm sure changing the expansion bottle cap made a massive difference, maybe the water is at a higher pressure now (which I know from work helps to transfer heat)

Mine works fine now too. Original fault was the thermostat opening early, only noticed it when I fitted a VDO temp gauge & sender. Was reading 75 degrees even though original LR gauge was mid travel. VDO now reads 90 and heater works well.

I stripped my 200tdi heater box all down a couple of years ago new seal etc and quite frankly it made sod all difference the heater is crap, to make things worse as the engine comes off load it actually starts to cool down and running light for a couple of miles see the real engine temp drop to 75 degc (this is in minus degc temps) so the only time the heater works sort of okayish is when engine is running hard and at a constant 85/87 degc.
Over the last couple of years its had new everything and still the same.
Rad muff helps but not much.

Well, I am a little relived to know I am not the only one suffering during the winter. On the bright side, it doesn't overheat when in the desert in Morocco, no matter how hard the engine is working.

My mates was a little better but then he ran a v8 and when he left home he had to drive uphill for a mile or so, so the engine was working from the off so got hot and stayed hot.
Whereas when I left home it was 3 miles of 30mph which didnt help one little bit, I just think its a trait of the 200, but have to say Ive owned 3x200, 2x300 1xtd5 and 1 D3 and all take roughly the same time to warm up on the same route to work, but the 300/td5 and the D3 stay hot when up to temp unlike the 200.
Heated seats helped massively cheap kits off ebay, mate got the slightly better carbon ones and I have to say they were good.
