Perhaps due to respect, nostalgia, commiseration or patriotism. All silly, I know, but perhaps.
Unless there was good reason the the L/R in the fast lane is breaking all rules of convoy driving in the UK which was always stay in line and play follow the leader. Therefore if it continued for a long period of time I'd make a note of the number and report it to the military. They don't like bad publicity / behaviour anywhere. If I were stuck behind a convoy and they were behaving properly so be it...
