new vcu new tyers and up in snow useless stuck did not look like and drive was going to rear very disapointed in it
 
sounds like its your ird/gearbox and not the vcu afterall...take a look at kayes thread from yesterday, lokks like you've both got the same probs....
 
How did you diagnose the faulty VCU?

Also, what type of tyres are you running, are they M+S rated or crappy budget efforts?

I have a facelift like yours and mine is superb in snow. Yours should be as well if it has decent tyres and a transmission that works...
 
As much as i hate to say it ; Freelanders are extremely capable 4x4's.


ANY 4x4 is only as good as the condition its in and the person driving it though.
 
funny this should all come out today i have the same problem front wheel drive and traction control light on but no rear wheel drive vcu from guess where same place freelander spares I will be onto them tomorrow

I agree - there is something seriously wrong here - or is it a coincidence you all got re-con VCUs from the same supplier.

My Freelander does everything bar climb trees.

Only lack of ground clearance stops me - and that means 7 to 8" deep snow, before I'm bothered at all.

I agree, 8 inches of snow is fine to drive in before i chicken out, i recon the car could get through but the roads to my work are lonely and unclassed so if i get stuck, it's a long walk to get help.

If you both are having issues with the same part, that does throw up questions on the quality of the refurb. How long have you both had the recon VCU's fitted to your cars?

Weeks, months or years?
 
well I have had my auto gearbox done so no problems there I had it done by a garage that has been doing gearboxes for about 40 odd years and trust them I know there is a bit of play in my diff but have brought one to replace that and the only other thng was the vcu I brought is serveral months ago and replaced it first real bit of snow and I get this front wheels spining and traction control light on but no rear wheel drive by the way all new tyres on goodyear wrangler so no problems there as soon as I got into the wifes freelander I could tell the difference should i trust freelander spares to give me a working vcu or not as the old one is not fit for well what can I realy say with out swearing

hi all just found the reciept paid for it on last day of august fitted first week of sepember and there is a years warranty on them
 
also just to say never had any issues with the IRD I had problems with the bearings on the VCU so I thought I would change the lot I can not wait until tomorrow to see what happens as I paid to have it fitted and he had my old one back if I want my money back and go to another dealer then I will have to pay more because I do not have one to exchange then as freelander spares would have theirs back difficult situation now

must be a problem there somewhere, mine last winter was brilliant on pirelli p6000 tyres down to the wear limiters and it went everywhere in the snow
 
Test yer vcu's to see if they work with the test below. This time of year is a gift as you can also test yer Freelander on snow whilst someone films it for you. Filmed proof the rear wheels have no drive may be needed for you to argue your vcu has failed.
