Well an Email but same thing My MP is Sir Roger Gale

Dear Sir Roger,
It has just come to my attention that new MOT rules are coming in May which would bring us into line with EU regulations.
We know that once in place these rules will be almost impossible to remove again, even when we leave the EU
The area that has me concern is the diesel cars restriction, is their an exemption for older cars?
I own (as do many many others ) a 2003 Diesel Land Rover Discovery 2 (1999-2004), the modification of which was necessary to ensure it still runs well and it still passes current emission tests, The new MOT however , despite the vehicles age, and it's function, insists on the full function of an Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve, known as an EGR,(the majority of part suppliers and Land Rover mechanics actually remove this part because it fills the engine inlets with 'crud' (their term) which effectively restricts the breathing of the engine causing all sorts of problems.)
So asking for a fifteen year old car to be as fully functioning as it was when new is a LOT, Assuming a brand new valve would work that's still a high percentage cost of the value of the car. Which as someone on less than eight pounds per hour I couldn't afford, The resale value of the Vehicle would be almost nothing and without a vehicle I would have trouble getting to and from the different places I work at ( I am a support worker and have to travel)
They do say it was a matter for Public Consultation, but I am active on a Vehicle Owners forum and we knew nothing about this
I do hope that something can be done to help the owner of older diesels (from 2001) which had been hit once already by the retroactive road fund hikes in 2010/11 and now this
Regards

Hopefully it's not too late , as the rule state that Cats EGR' DPF etc etc all have to be fitted as the manufacturer intended and not modified in any way and all 2014 on vehicles must be able to pass emissions tests at the same level as when they were new (even though some vehicles have done huge mileages since then)

i think that isnt going to make any difference at all if i am honest. But i appluad you bothering to email your MP

yerbut isn't that just no visible smoke from the exhaust? shouldn't be too hard to achieve provided the injun is in reasonable condition. Or have the emissions requirements been tightened up while I wasn't watching?

I doubt if that is going to help. For the simple reason that your MP is part of the Government. And the stated policy of this Government, and of the Opposition, is to remove your vehicle, and as many others like it as they can, from the roads as soon as possible.

Regarding EGR if you have retained the acoustic cover on your TD5 engine then that will conceal the front of the inlet manifold and the tester will not be able to see if the EGR valve has been removed. They are not allowed to disturb engine covers or undertrays. It also helps if you have left the EGR cooler in place.

There doesn't seem to be much reference to older vehicles, my guess is the Govt. thinks there are so few of them now they don't make much difference.

I SOOOO hope you're right ! Of course I am in full agreement - leave the older stuff alone ;) - But all I can see in the published info hints that the basic emissions test will continue for them - thing is, they could so easily state it for a fact, and yet they haven't, or more accurately, I haven't seen it "written in stone"...

@Moron is on a referesher this week, so it would good to get his input on the fiasco....

You’ll get a polite response written by an assistant noting your concerns and promising to take up with the Department of Transport......and you’ll hear nothing further.

Another thing that seems to be going to happen on the same day is an exemption from MOT for all vehicles considered to be historic. Which as far as the Govt. are concerned is over 40 years old.
There is also lots about vehicles built in the 21st century, but not much about vehicles built in the 20 years or so in between.
I take some hope from the fact that the new tax bands did not penalise such vehicles, and that the tax and MOT exemptions seem to be rolling, so more and more of the these vehicles will be taken under the wing of the exemptions as the years pass.

I too look forward to seeing what Moron reports from the refresher course.

Don't under estimate the impact of letters to your MP. If everyone on this forum wrote to their MP and followed up on the MP's reply, their in trays would fill up and their time would be eaten into. Don't email, write a letter it takes longer to process. I know how time consuming letters are, I used to draft the responses.
