Can anyone tell me what position the flat part of the arm spindle is supposed to be in. My driver’s side wiper has recently developed that annoying habit of trying to wipe clean the bulkhead vents instead of just sticking to cleaning the glass like I want it to! Currently, the flat part is pointing downwards, but when the arm is put on with the grub screw against the flat part, the arm is already off the screen.
So which is wrong, spindle or arm? Passenger side works fine, but the grub screw is near the top, which doesn’t help me!

The arm and adaptor are separate parts so you just need to move the arm around to a different position.
Separate the arm from the adaptor, fit the adaptor to the spindle and tighten the grub-screw, re-fit the arm in the correct position.
There is no key-way on the adaptor so the arm can fit in any position.

How they came to move n the first place I don't know, if you haven't had them apart then maybe the splines on the adaptor and / or arm are shot? The only other option is that the teeth on the wheel-box are shot and the drive cable has jumped.

Cheers for that Litch. I didn’t realise the adapter was separate from the arm, I can see the splines now I look close, I’ll fit a new adapter part as mine looks a bit oval-shaped now.
 
Your adaptor may not be worn as the hole is not round, that said new adaptors are very cheap.

Yours @bluedog333 looks original & not worn.
Other wheel boxes have a flat on the spindle.
But sounds like your wheel box has worn & jumped a few teeth or moved on the wiper arm spindle.

I think a previous owner has changed either the box or spindle at some point as my spindles have flats. I’ve bought some matching adapters and will pop them on later to hopefully solve the issue.
 
Well, that was a short-lived pleasure! Who said worn box? What tends to wear first, spindle or box? I’ll pop to the spares shop tomorrow and see if I can get a spare spindle and see how that goes before I start ripping the dash apart.
Good job it wasn’t chucking it down with sticky white rain on the way home! Doh

A little ferel holds the spindle but if force it comes out.

I think I may have had a dodgy 2 boxes.

Driver’s side is the problem. Sounds like a dash off job then! I’ll see what happens when I rotate the teeth, hopefully that’ll solve it.

Drop the top of the dash off where youre vents are to spin the spindle.;)
Also check the play in the wheel box . You may be able to tighten it up with the tab on the rear of the box which holds pressure on the wheel.

But yes a full dash to change wheel box :mad:
 
Top rail only, not at all difficult.
Remove LH grab handle, RH heater control lever panel and unscrew the top rail.
Cheers Litch, I’ve had that off so many times I think I’m going to replace the screws with wing nuts. I dropped a quid down there last time, so it’ll be good to get that back too.

I stand to be corrected as the last time I fitted the wheelboxes it was when I was re-fitting my bulkhead but I seem to recall that years ago I replaced them via the top-rail.

Wiper fix take two... new wheel box fitted and wiper works as good as new. Male and female splines on the old spindle and wheel were completely worn. Only had to remove top rail and instrument cluster, but it was a very tight fit.
