Afternoon folks.

I've got an ex-RAF 1987 90 2.5 diesel and the windscreen wiper blades have a bit of a mind of their own!

80% of the time they are fine, they sit kinda where they should and clear most of the screen. But then they have a wee mad moment and "clack" off the bottom of the screen. Eventually they kinda come back to where they should but when you are driving in the rain for a bit the noise gets a tad annoying, plus it is going to knack the rubber on the blades.

Any pointers?

Mine do that...it is annoying. My solution was to turn up the radio :eek:

Mine do the same. It's a symptom of wiper gearbox wear. If you search for wiper gear boxes, you will be enlightened. It's a job that's on my todo list. In the meantime, you could try pulling the wiper off it's spline and refitting it so it's a bit higher up - that's what I've done.

Done the same on my 90,

Careful with the grub screw though, mine rusted on, currently held on with a grub screw from a kitchen door

The sprocket wears and skips (some have a grooved wheel), as a bodge you can whip it apart and turn the sprocket through 180 degrees to where it's not been used.

If you get new ones dont buy cheap because you'll spend ages fitting it, stick a screwdriver through your finger putting everything back together, find out that it still skips and launch a spanner that smashes the screen on your multimeter :eek:

Mine wasn't fully cured until I changed the drive shaft spring thingy from the motor to wheel boxes
