Hey guys, spent my entire lunch at work looking at threads on this subject and could not find a reason. So far I have fixed the drive train rattle and the transmission thunk. One was suspension upsetting the geometry of the axle and the thunk was sorted with new half shafts and drive flanges. But the wine from the gear box area is driving me mad start her up and she sounds fine, as soon as I step on the clutch and the winning starts. It's still there when I engage 1st gear and start moving (admittedly a touch quieter). It is really noticeable when I stop at lights and leave her in gear with the clutch depressed.

If anyone has any useful suggestions I am all ears I love my fender but by Christ she is chewing through my wallet at the moment.

We call the thing a "throw out bearing" in the US. You call it a "thrust bearing" and I think it is your problem.

No mate it's pretty much continuous, even when it's in gear and she is running, although it's a lot quieter when in gear. As soon as it's in neutral and me foot is off the clutch it sounds totally normal.

as post 3 then youd need to drop the gear box to replace it

Thanks to both of you guys. Finally, how big a job is it to swap it out? This 90 is my daily driver for work so the job needs to be able to be done in a weekend!!!! Any top tips you guys have would be appreciated. Cheers

Should be possible to do it in a weekend. My brother and I used to be able to get the gearbox out of our series 2 and back in again in a day but that was after we'd done it a few times. While it's off you might as well replace the clutch too, so you won't have to do it again anytime soon.

Should be able to do it in a day if you get an early start.

Thanks for all the input guys. Watched a couple of videso on You Tube last night from Paddocks on exactly how to do it so I will be ordering the parts shortly and getting to it asoon as I have made myself a transmission jack. Go ahead and do it. It's a confidence booster. It's not difficult, just heavy and time consuming. Work methodically, take pictures, label everything and store nuts, bolts, etc carefully and you'll swear less when you put everything back again.
