Righty Ho...finally got round to taking door card off to see why the window drops down as soon as i touch the electric button and wont go all the way up again...had a good idea it was the regulator..

Anyways..i noticed it wasn't sitting in the horizontal bar thats attached to the scissor like mechanism..as i tried to guide it on this bar, which was bit rusty, fell off! Poo, i thought...good job i've ordered a new one...

Then i touched the button to get the window up and the damn thing works...sort of!! It will go halfway down and then up again no prob...more than that and it has to be guided...so now it works better than it has for ages as long as i dont wind it down more than halfway!!

I'm confused!! I'm tempted to leave it as it is...cos fitting the new mechanism looks like a bugger of a job. Do i have to take the inner door skin off? :confused::confused:
 
It'll get worse so change it now while it is in bits. Did you buy a good after market one?
 
I've got a used original in good nick...does the bloody skin have to come off?
 
No not at all, it's a straight forward job. the frame around the window can be removed by a few bolts.

The wing mirror comes away too.

It's easier than trying to fit it all inside the door while the glass is still in situ.
 
Cheers...will give it a go as soon as regulator arrives! Its the week of servicing and repair!
 
you just need some wedges to hold glass up out the way,after slackening the 2 bolts holding window to regulator ,lower regulator to lowest point with switch undo all bolts and plug ,it will come out of bottom hole in inner skin refasten in and raise regulor by switch so bolts are visible to reattach window dont need to remove frame or any thing else
 
When I did mine I had to detach the motor first to get the regulator out of the door but then later I read you don't have to do that ... but we will see won't we... a bit of a pain on the back of my hands with the sharp edges but it only took me a hour to do one very cold January morning and that's with the lining up of the motors drive cog with the regulator.

Only for D2 does the book say remove the top frame but it can be replaced without.

Its a D1 so there's no bolts on the top of the door as far as i can see..so james must have been referring to the D2
 
It can be removed without taking the top frame off or the glass out. Mostly the job is done with the glass still in.

It can be an awkward job made worse by sometimes the bottom rail on the glass is rusted up or has come away from the glass due to the rubber that holds it perishing.
 
That bottom rail has gone..fell off when i took door card off...god knows whats holding up the window...bogeys?
 
I used one of those dent suckers on the glass to hold the window up whilst slicing my hands getting the regulator out-you are going to enjoy this Storm:D:D:D

Sounds like its easier on a D2 than a D1 James...there's no bolts on the doortop to take panel off, seems to be a case of drop it whilst holding/securing glass...then wiggling it out of the small holes in the bottom of the door before cutting hands to pieces forcing new regulator through a gap thats about 3 inches too small...looking forward to it. i might wear ovengloves.
 
piece of ****, Storm - even I have done it a couple of times, but be careful - theres a couple of different versions.
