I have tried to wade through all the threads even remotely related to window regulators! Unsuccessful attempt with an ebay kit today resulted in damaging the same bit of wire that was damaged on the one that was taken out:confused: Can anyone advise on how to tension the cables and to make sure that it's the correct tension? Muchos Ta:)

You don't have to ;)

There are two springs on either side of the motor that do that.

If you have slack you need to do another turn round the spool, bit fiddly cos the bastid jumps off as you put the spool back onto the motor!

MHM, the 'how to' by Northern Irelander'? Yes but in that case I have no idea what is going wrong - the new cable is now damaged and I have no idea what I need to do different, - seriously peed off now have spent significant time on it today and still another 2 to do!

I have fixed two on the wifes (plastic cable guide at the top of the rail broken off) with that mix plastic putty stuff, both times the cables were well chewed up but they both still work perfectly!

TBH sounds like the kit is dodgy, has its snagged on the cable sleeve?

the cable should be good and tight when you 'seat' the second cable.

At a guesstimate +/- 3mm on the old cable length should keep it taut enough.

A complete repair/refit should take a couple of hours

I found that it was easiest to move the window rail so that it was almost up (or down!), wind the cable onto the drum correctly and fit the motor gear, then tape the cable in place around the white plastic sleeve end where it comes into the motor housing. This meant that I could wind the other cable a couple of times around without the whole thing springing out. Then I used a spare length of cable to pull the cable onto the reel, this seemed to tension the lot just fine. No problems since.
