What r your thoughts of fitting a winch to a disco while keeping the STD front bumper????? What winch do u think will hide nicely behind and in the bumper, all I want is the rollers on the front and a shackle. The number plate will be either alfa style to the side or in the light bar that I want. Can it be done???? I ain't to keen on fitting a winch bumper

It's too low and will collect mud and crap. not to mention getting battered by rocks and tree stumps

of course if u think of extreme off-roading but the man wanted something "discreet" for the standard bumper and i dont see a better way for this

But extreme offroading is the only time you're likely to need a winch

AND that installation is no use whatsoever for anyone who want's to indulge in extreme offroading

dont agree with that, Pikey - several times going laning locally, a winch would have been usefull for tree clearance, where they have blocked the track.

is there much call for keeping the origanal bumper?????
after a few peeps ascin this week i was thinking about doing somthing like a tray to fit behind a standerd bumper with reinforceing for the fairlead on the front

wud only be for light duty tho due to only mounting on the inside bolts of the origanal bumper

any input wud be great

Bow Saw and a long rope?? Have cleared a 30ft x2ft tree trunk that had obviously been deliberately felled across the track. only took 10minutes.

I ain't exactly entering winch comps it's just me and my buddy hitting a few green lanes!!!!! We don't even care if we get stuck and have to dig our way out cause it's ads to the fun lol (not had to as of yet but we shall se what tomorrow brings lol)

If it's only for light duty you don't need a winch?? If ya wanna winch and your gonna use it iin anger get a decent bumper to mount it in.

If you really do want a winch for "light occasional" use. Get a Tirfor.

The mount it as high as you can and then you won't be getting stuck on the winch. and it won't be under water/mud when you need it most

The idea sounds a bit muddled. By all means make it discreet, but also realise that the standard bumper and its low approach angle is something of a limitation on a Disco. There's plenty of choice of decent looking heavy duty (winch) bumpers.

Hahahaha sean u r a funny man!!!!!! Now back to the point lol. The winch being mounted high up makes very good sence thanks for that point. And yes there is alot of point fitting 1 as if my buddy gets stuck in front of me and I ain't got grip to pull him out then ohhhhh it's proved very usefull ain't it!!!!!

Ok I have to ask: HOW MUCH of the standard bumper do you want to keep? As I'm sure you know, the bumper consists of a number of parts: the main metal part in the middle, the end corner pieces, the spoiler lip and the number plate plinth. The sides and spoiler are a serious restriction on approach angle, and will probably be ripped off on your first green lane trip. I have no idea why LR installed such a low spoiler in the first place, probably to appeal to the school run/lifestyle market but its definitely one of the first things (along with decent tyres) for proper off roading.

So, after a bit of common sense, you'll realise you need to modify this in some way or another. AND buy a suitably strong tray which will bolt to the chassis, to mount the winch on. AND the bumper will need additional mods to allow the winch fairlead to be fitted.

Hence......99% of people throw away the standard one and fit a winch bumper, which addresses the above problems in one nice (and not too expensive...) solution.

There's plenty of variety, you can buy a subtle, nice looking, but heavy duty winch bumper for a Disco 1. Its only the most popular car modified for off roading, after all.
