i am just about to strip my winch down to give it a good clean out and a service as it does not seem to be pulling like it used to. i have know idea how old it is or how it has been cared for as it came on my disco it is a Tmax EWI-11000

it looks identical to the EWI 10000 and the EWI 12000
has any one else done this to this winch and got any tips i have looked over other winches and seems simple enough but anything specific would be good

im also going to fit a new rope to the winch and am wondering if its ok to use a synthetic rope over a wire for safty reasons i have been told the drum has a brake thus can cause them to melt. and was wondering what peoples experience with this was

Use the winch monthly and it will last longer, it needs to move reguarly to keep in good condition. When you say "pulling like it used to" it either pulls or it doesnt ? Is it noisy or doesnt it pull the same loads ?

Synthetic is amazing stuff and may be technically stronger but its ****E in my view as I have snapped mine after 2 winches... Wire can take a lot more abrasion/scuffing and catching on goodness knows what. If you winch in perfect conditions, get synth, if you are likely to haul yourself out of the **** in far from perfect straight pulls wire..

Wire rope is lethal and in competitions i dont know anyone that uses it,its difficult to handle , difficult to spool on, splinters easily, and when it snaps stand well clear

Plasma rope just falls to the gnd if it breaks and it floats.ive had a marlow rope which has never failed and gets used a lot,as for your comments about perfect conditions what utter bollocks. Mine gets submerged regulary gets sunk in mud gets winched at right angles using multiple snatch blocks and hasnt failed.

after chatting with andy at ruftrack i am deffinatly getting a plasma rope from him very usefull to talk to and nice chap willing to share his welth of information.

as for the winch i mean in my time of ownership it has never been surviced and to my knowlage has never been in its life time it works fine but does not seem to have the power it used to so was thinking of taking it apart regreasing re brushing to make it new again

Well thanks for that sweeping statement.. It was Dyneema Bowrope and It suprised me hence I thought it was faulty but I am not buying it again to find out...

I have a marlow on my winch but have a wire as a backup. More because it was came with the winch than any thing else.

Just cos its dyneema dont mean its any gd, i bought and returned 3 dyneema ropes from winch**** all supposed to be 12 strand all 3. Broke then i bought a marlow rope and had no probs

well it turns out my winch is a EWI-10,000 but had a EWI-11000 badge on the top of it how weard is that. however the serial number on the side states its a EWI-10,000 so makes life easier.

anywyas i have stripped it all down removed huge amounts of Emulsified grease from the gearbox and everywhere else used whole can of wd40 to clean and make sure are free running which im pleased to say they all are everything looks near mint.

So i have treated it to:
A repaint on the out side in hammered silver its looking very nice
A new solenoid thanks to bearmach.
A new orange 100ft 11mm Plasma line Thanks to rufftracks

my next job is to reasemble the gearbox tonight with fresh grease and and reseal the casings together.

i use beef dripping, its cheap and tasty

i just used molly grease (clear molly or cv grease ) in the gearbox

its made such a difference it was well worth the efford of taking it apart and doing the job.

i even took the motor armiture out and sanded it down till it was clean using the boot polishing method (strip of 400 grit and buff while Turing the armiture else u get flat spots.) and its given the whole thing a new lease of life and its totaly watertight now thanks to sealent used on all faces.

worth every Minuit i spent on it.

i have also ditched the standard tmax solenoid in favor of a durite sealed one.
