I am intending to fit a Superwinch to My Landrover defender, the winch has a 4.5hp electric motor, I was told by a friend at work that it would be a good idea to fit a second battery, is this necessary? If so would i need to fit an uprated Alternator, cheers

Depends on how serious you are going to use the winch, try the search button there will be stacks on this very subject.

it's going to get a bit of use, I use it around the farm and also get the car in the sticky stuff just for fun quite regularly.

ideally yes fit a second battery but you dont have to if you do fit second battery you will need a split charge system an you can also fit alternator from discovery as thay put out more charge

Don't forget that you will need a way of split charging the batteries too. If you direct wire them the good battery will be dragged down to the level of the bad battery.

Put in the biggest batteries you can get, use deep cell type and put in a 100 amp alternator and you won't have any problems. If not you will ruin your batteries and alternator By over loading the batteries( over drawing of power and not enough power reserve) plus making your alternator over work not producing enough electric . Also increase the size of your battery cables and the supply lead from the alternator

Best tip I ever got was - biggest battery (in terms of of CCA) I could get, fat cables and a good earth contact.

Works for me......

Thanks for the advice guys i'm currently looking at the optima batteries with a T Max auxiliary battery system

tmaxx split charge worked really well in my old fender and was a p.o.p to wire up
