I have a set of general grabber AT2 tyres I want to fit on my freelander. Someone has worried me by telling me that they are T rated whereas manufacturers recommended tyre rating is H rated?
T rated tyres are fit for vehicles up to 118 mph and my v6 top speed is theoretically 113mph.... Any advice here or shall I just ring my insurance company and ask them?

have yu looked at pikeys wheel and tyre fred - that will tell yu wot it means.

in theory you aint supposed to go down a rating..but i have seen it done...had a turbo nutter boy racer thing in once for an mot it had t rated tyres but it should have had v rated. the testers manual says i cant fail it..lol just advised the kid who brought it in he said his "proper wheels"were away being repainted.. another mockery of the mot test..

Put your vehicle details in here, if you tyres were classed as an upgrade then I think your ok to downgrade to the basic recommended rating. I agree with the Mot thing though but provided some otherwise identical V6s were actually fitted with T rated they should pass.

Ok all - I have found the answer:
a) You can fit any tyre so long as it has a speed rating in excess of the manufacturers claimed speed for the vehicle. ie - My V6 has claimed design speed of 113mph and T rated tyres are 118mph - so ok.
b) You have to inform your insurance company as changing tyre spec is considered as a vehicle modification - I did this today with Direct Line and they recorded the type of tyres I was fitting, confirmed that it was ok and told me they would issue me with replacement insurance documents confirming the acceptance of the "modification"
c) Insurance company told me that had I not reported the "modification" my insurance would have been invalidated!

Hope that straightens things out - apparently no end of insurance claims are rejected due to such "modifications"!
