Hi guys,

I have been offered a good S3 box for a very reasonable price. If it will fit my 1966 Series 2a I will be saved the hassle of reconditioning my box. Question is (excuse my ignorance); will it fit as a straight swap?

Cheers,
Boggie

I am not an expert but I have a Ser 2a rolling chassis and a Ser3 Landy, both diesel and the gearboxes look the same. Hope this helps but you may want to double check with someone else.

they are a straight fit apart from slave cylinder which can be achieved by making fresh pipe to passenger side

Cheers All,

My box has no synchro in 2nd gear. I am not sure it should have as I have been given conflicting advice. I am a bit rusty at double declutching so keep crunching it (especially on downshifts) but I will get there. My wife might struggle a bit though so I am thinking that a series 3 box with synchro in every gear would be a good upgrade. Downside is that it I do this I will need to fit a new clutch, slave, pipes and I might as well bung in a new master whilst I am at it. Bottom line being I will have to spend IRO £150 on top of the gearbox cost. However, it would mean that I will effectively have reconditioned the complete clutch / gearbox so should last a while....... bit short on cash though.

check gearbox as there isnt many good ones kicking about but parts are available,i think you could use the same clutch and your slave should bolt to series 3 gearbox ,pipe 1/4 brake pipe use your old fittings get some one to flare each end and bend to fit remember slave cylinder bolts are whitworth bsc

Virtually every part is available, which is nice!

If all is needed in yours is a syncro...and you are taking the box out anyway, you may as well take yours out, take it apart and have a good look at it it...if that is all it needs then easy job. You could always fit the Series 3 syncro etc stuff into your box regardless, and then leave the sale cylinder etc as it is. Chances are if you buy a box, there will be something wroong with it that the owner does not know about! I would never had guessed mine had so many bits missing inside!

Thanks James / Rusty,

I spoke to a specialist today who told me my box might not have had a 2nd gear synchro from new. If this is the case are you saying I can fit a 2nd gear synchro to my box? That would be a better and much cheaper option.

its not as easy as that where as you can and i have make any different combinations i would go for series 3 box with 2a front housing so that you dont need any changes to vehicle ,if yours is the later type 2a box with large front layshaft brg you could use yours on series 3 box including input shaft and clutcyh releas mechanism with it, if you try just to fit synchro in yours you get into problem of suffixs as each has different teeth combinations

Quite possibly! :)

Do any of you know if the bellhosing / clutch release system is interchangeable between the S2a and S3 boxes? This would solve my issues and save me money. Just buy the S3 box, swap the bellhousing / clutch release and fit the 'hybrid' box using existing clutch and hydraulics.

Just a thought.....

yes if 2a has the same size front lay shaft brg suffix b onwards (letter at end of gearbox number) done quite a few so know it works

Thanks James,

Can I ask where the number is stamped and if I need any special tools / gaskets etc?

Is the clutch from a series 3 the same as a series 2a? IE; will a 9.5 inch DP8117 friction plate, CA5584 pressure plate (pic below) and an FTC5200 release bearing be any use for me fitting this 'hybrid' S3 box to my 2a?

Thanks James,

I guess there is no way of knowing the dowel situation until I have pulled the box off and look, unless anyone happens to know the engine number range for three dowel flywheels.....

I guess I should simply buy the clutch and hope for the best. Trouble is that I have a specific weekend in mind as I have help, in the shape of my brother in law, staying with his family. It will be a great excuse for us to escape wives / children to tinker outside. However, it is going to be a short lived escape plan if we pull the box off and find my clutch won't fit! This will leave me to do the job on my own the following weekend too.

Cheers,
