Could really do with some help here,
Engine cuts out at a junction so I try to restart the the engine. At the turn of the key I get a whiring noise as the engine turns over but doesn't start. attempt this three times at which time the engine continues to whirr (turn over) with the key in the off position. I remove the key and this continues. In fact the only way I can stop the engine trying to turn over is to isolate the earth connection on the battery.
I have disconnected the ignition switch from the barrel and removed the brown and brown/red wire from the switch to no avail.
Disconnecting the wire from the coil to the distributor produces the same result.
Not sure where to go from here, any ideas????????????????

I would guess that the solenoid terminals have electrically welded themselves together. The only fix is to replace it.

Hi,
Thanks for your help, actually disconnected all the wires to the ignition switch and still the engine turned over so I was going to replace the selonoid tomorrow. This will be the second selonoid I've replaced within a month, any ideas as to why this is happening? Have recently replaced the starter, starter cable, battery, ht leads, plugs, coil, contact points, dist. cap, rotor, selonoid and condenser.

The only hint of a problem was the engine seemed to turn over for a long time before starting
regards for now

A faulty starter was drawing too much current thus welding the solenoid so took the unit back for a replacement, this one is better but I'm still not overly convinced as it seems to overspin before the engine starts.
(Part was from Britpart so be aware, also the thread on the cable connection has a tendency to shear, this is my fourth unit)

Its just a big puzzle really as its life started with a diesel but now runs a petrol, no idea what year or type so maybe its the wrong starter:confused: Parts that have been replaced are like for like but still based on a 2.25 series 3.

Hi i think if the starter is over spining it my be the wrong one with an undersize bendix, as for starting life as a diesel that shouldn,t matter
my series 3 started as a diesel and the previous owner put a 2.6 petrol in and mine goes like a train.
Are you familiar with this it may help?
