Only a guess but maybe cos they cannot guarantee the engine that would need to be fitted. If they fitted the engine and it packed up 2 weeks later after you'd paid them a lot of money it could come back on them. Not saying that you would but my guess is that somebody has done it and they are no longer willing to take a chance.

could be they are fitters who work by the book , rather than engineers that can make it up as they go along

What do you mean here - they wouldn't touch one to buy or they wouldn't contemplate doing the conversion?

they just said they wouldnt do the conversion. No explanation why.

ill give steve parker a ring tommorrow and get some rough idea on prices

what exactly do you want ?
someone to fit a 200tdi ?
do you have the engine ?
are you looking for someone to supply and fit ?.?

i use Brock garage 07957443954 Chris. he may be able to supply and fit for you. you will have to ask but worth a phone call

Im looking at buying a 110 defender,
seen a few 2.5td's below my budget, Only think letting them down is the 2.5td enginge, as they all seem to have high mileage. and im hearing stories of them going kabooom.

So im planning ahead for a 200/300tdi conversion. need to know if my budget allows me to buy a 2.5td and convert it.

or try and get some more dollar together spend more than ideally like to and get a 110 with a 200tdi already in it.

id want the garage to get the engine and do all the work.
I figure they can tell a bad engine from good better than me.

i have no mechanical know how, otherwise id attempt it myself

From whats been said mate I think thats your problem, the garage is unwilling to fit what is in essence an unknown quantity (the engine), and are therefore unwilling to put their name to something they have very little control over;););)

big question ,depends on how you want it ,as fitting 300 in as it would have been ie r380 gearbox ,tunnel, floor plates etc or 200 fitting on your box ,about £1200 for 200 including parts labour ,£1800 for 300 as 300 would be factory fit £1300 300 on your box

mike try these guys thay are very cheap. they only charge £20 an hour thay done a 200 to new 200 for my mate about 6 months ago for £140 thay will probably say for you to get the engine. but don't know just ask they may supply. an thay also done a r380 to r380 £80 for one of the other lads its worth a try

Would it not save all the speculation if you just asked the garage why they wouldn't do the job?

"get some more dollar together spend more than ideally like to and get a 110 with a 200tdi already in it."

That sounds like the best plan for you, it might work out cheaper in the long run
Don't wait till winter to buy a Landy as the prices seem to go up !!!

i think this is going to be the plan.

fun fun fun.
time to start saving

Whats wrong with the TD?
I have TD in me 90 and she is a beaut, smokes a bit, and uses a bit of oil.
but the previous owner rebuilt it for, well the receipts say 800 quid odd.
The only time it has failed me is when I had a naff battery, O h and the winter killed the glow plugs. It takes at least 30 seconds on the plugs to start. But start it does in that hard winter, every day for work.
The TD aint that bad an engine.

But I do have a disco 200tdi to drop in.....soon.....honest:D:D

What i am saying is you could pick up a TD engine for fek all and get it and get it re conned and have a good reliable engine.
Just a thought:D
