I know this is the wrong place for unbiased advice or comment but:
should I remove the diesel engine from my stage 1 and refit a V8?????
 
I am of course totally unbiased, having owned four V8 RRC's :rolleyes:
Stage one's are a rare tool these days, I believe all the first years production in '79 went overseas & the model was discontinued in '83, so YES you should retrofit a 3.5 V8 on carbs. & return the vehicle to original. Pick-up, hard top or :)D) station-wagon?
 

Quite possibly the rarest of them all - I used to dream of owning one when I ran S3's but the nearest I got was a six cyl. safari into which I retrofitted a P5 engine.
When was the last time you saw a Stage one for sale, let alone a safari?
You really must go for the V8, if looked after it can only appreciate :D
 
If you wanted a bit more poke the manifold restrictor plates (if still fitted) could be removed or I guess an ex RR 3.5 would be a good choice - speak to your insurer first though.
 
depending what litre you want to fit ..a small block v8 is usless its only a 3.5 all sound and no go

I recommended the 3.5 because that's the original spec. for the Stage One & I totally disagree that the lump is 'useless' especially in a working vehicle. I've owned four RRC autos, admittedly all efi's (but then they are also higher geared than the 109) & don't have a performance problem when using the vehicle for the purpose for which it was intended - if I wanted more poke I wouldn't expect it from an old LR.
 
:oops: Previous owner of 1988 3.5 v8 CSW. Loved every minute of it sadly had to sell due to family disability. Best time was getting my first three points and fine for speed camera. Before that was a gutless 1984 2.25 diesel 90. Stage 1 were fitted with strombergs carbs to keep original. I remember watching Wheeler Dealers when they bought a Stage 1 to convert to LPG that was sold way to cheap I thought.
 
many times here in Australia 40 to 50 degree heat while driving down a beach and the sand is like talc powder
see many different makes and models of landrovers
I always stop and ask if there OK while they have the bonnet open

there reply is letting it cool down
good old diesel chugs on all day long

seriously to measure a mans wealth.... ask him how many cylinders does his boat anchor have
