Well despite the title its been a good day of jobs on the landy.... work on the flip front has moved on leaps n bounds and today was spent.......

fitting the new plastic bowls...

then in with the new glass freeform crystal lamps...

WP_20140906_12_25_02_Pro.jpg by The_Wild_Boar, on Flickr

then the HID bulbs, ballasts and wiring went in.....

WP_20140906_12_25_21_Pro.jpg by The_Wild_Boar, on Flickr

then on with the RAGE 4x4 grill n surrounds (at this point i need to add although excellent quality the fit was hopeless... the pre drilled holes meant the surround was nowhere near central on the headlight and it looked offset and crap... took a bit of fettling.... some remodelling of the wing underneath the surround etc etc.. extra couple of hours to actually get them fitting well) however it does mean grill and surrounds are now fitted using BZP sockets and stealing will be a major job unlike fitting with just screws as yoiur supposed to :)

then as in the title the damn drill bit broke just as i needed to drill n fit the last crystal front side light... arghhhhhhh typical, still will get one tomoz n finish off...

roll on tommorow

Hope you have either wipers or pressure wash and self leveling for the HIDeous lamps or it will be illegal.

i knew the hid pic would bring out some comments :) yep you need self levelling so when towing you dont blind people ... however i have no intention of ever towing so once set they are set and i also have a good local MOT station.... however its a 2 minute job to fit regular bulbs as the kit simply plugs into one of the standard 3 spade headlamp connections

however the 15" lift puts em above most drivers heads anyway ;)

glad i didnt mention brush wires lol

cheers steve

Self leveling and wash/wipe is required at all times not just when towing, load in the rear has more effect than towing. HID's selfish devices that blind other drivers:mad: Old tech too as LED is the way forward.

Being honest I don't have hid's but they certainly look cool. Especially on a defender makes it look a lot more modern if that's the look your going for. Looking good overall

Are LEDs at a level where they are usable yet?

I had LED side lights in my Mazda, but they kept getting damp and burning out.

Lots of new cars now fitted with LED headlamps including Seat and Citroen, probably others too. Not easy to fit LED's into old headlamps though.
20/30 watt LED spotlamps are fantastic.
Are you sure it was damp burning them out and not over voltage?

Nolden LED headlights have an IP rating of IP6K9K That IP rating is designed for vehicles which need regular heavy duty washing. Jet wash at 80C and 80 bar from a distance of about 6 inches. Also brightest road legal E marked LED headlights with a measured light output of 1700 lumens.

Could have been anything I guess.

They lasted about 3 weeks and when I took them out they were rusty, but one of the SMDs was black, so I assumed it got wet and shorted out. Given up now and gone back to bulbs.
