I have this number stamped on the underside of my bonnet (255). It’s a Series 3 – 1980. Can anyone shed light on the reason why it’s there?

Last few digits of a chassis number? For security marking sort of thing.

Could be.
Unfortunately, the Chassis has been replaced and the number was not refitted. And is not the VIN number either.
