Hey All,

My ‘81 Series diesel produces white smoke on idle until warm (normally takes around 10/15 mins) and when on the throttle. It smells of diesel so not steam. Any ideas for what to do to helps this would be appreciated.

used to be a good write up on a site called seriesdiesellandrover.com which went into the types of smoke and how to adjust pump timing etc, seems to have vanished now though :(

wish I had saved it

White smoke is unburnt fuel. Thats why it smells of such.

First thing to do is set your tappets then adjust the fuel pump by rotating it a mm at a time. If its adjusted as far as it will go then it might be the timing chain thats old and stretched.
