hi is it the battery only that is dead. Or did not earthing the black jump lead cause badness. The engine shuddered and could not cope with the headlamps taking away the power. So could be alternator? I don't know. I work at the local hospital and need my car diagnosed and fixed but don't want any Tom touching the car. Clearly a new battery is warranted. I don't know how to recalibrate window and disarm the alarm. Fearful that it needs a simple fix but the wrong person might make a meal out of it. The car is in a supermarket car park in the Guildford area, where are you, can you help, any input, info on dead battery td4 behaviour? Info please about dead battery faults

Are you in the AA or RAC? Rear window calibration is in the owners hand book, as is any other information needed.

If the engine engine doesn't run properly with the lights on, then it sounds like the alternator has died. You didn't connect jump leads the wrong way round, did you?
Who are you asking to help? There are hundreds of forum members, but most will offer advice over the forum. A few will help out though, if they are near by and read this.

Only if they can understand it. Is this some new foreign language?

I'd stick a new battery in it to get it home or to a garage to get it fixed.

Hi the guys who helped did not Earth the black lead to my car, they put the black lead to the terminal and there were about 5 attempts to start the car. The final attempt was accompanied by white smoke and shuddering of the car which is an auto with a now completely dead battery. I am not a member of the Aa or rac.

Not able to fit the new battery myself. E13 640 varta 70 amp is currentLy fitted. Garages not open Sunday's.

If someone is happy to help I am in Guildford. There was white smoke and shuddering.

This post seems to be missing the introduction - take a deep breath, marshall your thoughts, and tell us what happened from the beginning. We’ll be happy to help.

I’m guessing:
1. You had a flat battery and tried to jump start.
2. Once started, the car wouldn’t run right with headlights on.
3. Now the rear window is down and alarm playing up.

Is this correct?

My concern is the battery is so flat the window won't get the power it needs to go back up then the car will be unsecured and not at home and not at garage. Ideally I need someone to diagnose the car THEN to make a decision based on this, and garages are shut Sunday's.

I have not got to number 3 yet. You are correct about 1 and2.
One of the "helpers" put his foot on the accelerator to really intensify the shudder and white smoke. I had to tell him to take his foot off the pedal. Has this damaged the engine? No fuel injection working if batt was so low?

No - the attempted starting would have caused excess fuel in the engine which would appear as unburnt diesel smoke. Don’t worry about that for now. How did this all start?

Thursday night it was jump leaded and I drove it up to the m25 and back about 30 mins at 60mph ish. Friday it started okay, but on way home from work the red bat light flickered so I picked up a friend and drove to petrol station to pump up front tyre and left engine running to take it for another drive. But on the way it started lose power so I turned lights off and managed to get to petrol station, as I was trying to leave there it conked out. It had petrol. I went for air. The traction control and hill descent were on and the abs light. Helpers at the petrol station tried to jump

In hindsight those lights for the low tyre were telling me something else wrong. I just thought it was the tyre. First gear to send was slow Thursday. The feel was no power type feel on the way to petrol station.

Okay - as far as I can see, your alternator is goosed.

@blue beasty is this one for LZIR?

Otherwise, can’t you simultaneously join and get rescue from AA/RAC/Green Flag? They used to offer this type of service.

I had a fiesta before that had a bit of trouble as using car for short journeys repeatedly. I assumed the freelander just needed a spin like the old ford I had. I have injured my foot and so have not driven the car at the weekends recently so the battery would have had extra work and with autumnal weather the addition of the wipers and blower on the screen will have sucked it dry.

Yes, but if you’re driving along and the battery light comes on, then the car dies - that’s most likely alternator.

From what members are aging I need a new battery and an alternator are you near to Guildford or know someone who can help nearby. The window is not stuck open, not yet at least.

Okay this is logical, but I was in a panic as I did not know what to do.
We guessed that ;)

I’ve tagged in a mod who will hopefully comment on getting a nearby member to you, but don’t put all your eggs in that basket.

Other options - a competent friend with a tow rope?
RAC etc. Join and rescue?
