Hello!
First time Defender owner here. Bought a bit of a project and super excited to get this beast back on the road.

I've got a whiring noise when accelerating and feels slow above 30mph and does not pull up any inclines. I've pressure tested the intercooler and seemed okay, and replaced the boost pipes as they were looking worst for wear. The defender appears to have had an engine change at some point as it had AC fitted (but no pipes and no controls installed in the cab) so I have replaced the aux belt (fitting additional pulley as required).

I don't have access to a diagnostic reader yet - believe Nanocom is the preferred? Is there a cheaper alternative?

Took the wastegate actuator off and it operates, although the wategate was a little sticky and has freed up, although wondering if it is just sticking open a little and not holding boost?

Video Here!

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

Sounds more like a whining noise or screeching even.
Turbo, exhaust manifold?
TD5 is it?
Yeah 2004 TD5.
I had a look at the rear of the exhaust manifold as I understand they can warp and couldn't see anything obvious. If it was a leak somewhere I would expect the sound to be more variable as the noise responds consistently to the accelerator pedal!

Nothing, as currently it will not start...
Posted another thread about that, as don't think its entirely related (but could be). I've invested in a Nanocom and had some old codes for EGR closed and other things, but cleared and no new codes present. Once I can get it it running, hopefully it will show something!

Separate issue with non-starting (see other thread). It appears to be the battery although still think there is a fuel issue.

Anyway, took the wastegate actuator apart and the wastegate was mostly free, but sometimes would never return to 'neutral' position. I've tried my best to loosen it up (although appreciate WD40 is not a long term solution). Took for test drive and still no luck. Whiring sound when on the accelerator - if you put your foot on and off the pedal, the whiring sound goes up and down consistently.

Boost never exceeds 0.8bar. Nanocom csv attached for anyones interest.

No codes after a 20 minute run.

I'm stumped.
