Hi
Range Rover P38 4.6 Late 99
Experienced whine and vibration coming from the front, around 100 miles like this. First step was to remove the front drive shaft to isolate the front diff, when I had the diff off noticed that the bolt holding the drive flange on was loose, this happened about 18 months ago, tightening up fixed the problem. This time put locktight on it and torqued up. Unfortunately this time has not fixed the problem. Vibration has gone. But still getting a……best way to describe is Voooooshhhh when accelerating, deceleration and coasting is fine. Am thinking that outer pinion bearing might be the issue. So questions I have are:-
How much play should be in the drive flange when all 4 wheels on the ground. I have around 4.5 degrees of play. Is this acceptable or have I got and issue with the diff
Outer bearing can be done In Situ? And is this a bad idea to do the outer without doing the inner?
Inner would require diff removal? Not a job to take lightly as I believe there are a bunch of settings to adhere to.
Any other comments appreciated
