The previous owner of my "range rover classic LSE 3.9 v8" upgraded the engine, he thinks the engine that was put in was the 4.6 from the p38. i need to get a new alternator and want to make sure i get the right one. how do i tell which engine it is??

thanks in advance

lse were all 4.2 from what I know- could be wrong
engine number passenger side on block by dipstick on 3.5 v8 never looked for them on 4.6 -but should be same

Not being funny Freddie, but he may have actually downgraded it from the 4.2 to 3.9... Have you not got any paperwork?

The 4.6 is usually coil packed due to the later GEMS distributorless engine management, and the 4.6 is a crossbolted strengthened block. The 4.6 is a serpentine engine with one long poly belt running all the ancillaries. The oil pump on the front is different as well.

It is possible to change timing cases and run 4.6 on distributor-engine number should confirm what it is

It is, but I'd expect paperwork to show this has been done by someone who knows what they are doing.

Freddie - 46D stamped there is the sign you have a 4.6 block.
