Hi,
Been driving a 96 4.6 p38 HSE LPG for a few years but need to get something a tad bit smaller so the wife can also drive it. So, with about 4k in my pocket which TD5 is the best? Dont care about toys, dont care about sun roofs, sound systems, dont like leather, or complicated electronics that tell you things. Must be ultra reliable and VERY comfortable. (wife is a district nurse and works nights)
Steve :)
PS Nothing too slow.

What sort of landy are you thinking about putting the engine in?

I presume that's an "in" joke.

No.

The TD5 is an engine NOT a vehicle.

The TD5 comes in 2 engine flavours. 10p and 15p. From what you have said, it sounds like you are after a chipped 15p (2002 onwards) engine.

£4k should just about buy you a new TD5 engine but you'll need to spend extra getting it chipped etc.

Now I guess the question that you were really asking is 'WHAT VEHICLE BEST FITS MY WIFES NEEDS?'

Only when we know what exactly it will be used for can we say

How many people will it be carrying?
Will it be needed for carrying bulky loads?
Will it be used mainly around town or for motorway cruising?
Is length gonna be an issue (parking issues)?
etc etc

From your description of what your wife does I would say that a Discovery will be best but you are asking for the earth if you think a £4k td5 discovery will be ultra reliable especially if chipped and thrashed.

My fault for asking a stupid question.
Lets start again. Which Discovery would be best for me/us? Mostly only two people, but we do need 4 doors (grandchildren and bad backs) No heavy/bulky loads or towing. length not really important. Mostly town and country lanes.

tbh at £4k I think it's probably better to keep an open mind rather than limit yourself to a certain trim type. The only thing that may help swing which way you go is whether you want one with air suspension or coil springs.

I would rather spend £3.5k and keep £500 back for upgrades/repairs thah spend the whole lot on the vehicle.

You can get some decent 2002+ discos for around 4-5k but are far and few between, ive noticed in just the last month prices have gone up for landrovers on ebay winter isn't the best time for buyers.

A 300TDI Disco - Jap re-import will be more reliable, cheaper and easier to fix.Look for a really tidy low mileage one with all the nicer bits they mostly had.(Buy her jewellery with the change :D )
However you look at it they are more dependable than a TD5.I fix the bloody things for a living so the last thing I want is to fix my own car - guess what I drive ? (And its not about money, just reliabilty and a four wheel drive that will carry 5/7 at a push, tow well and do firewood and off road work properly)
