As you know, I need a gearbox oil cooler and the sooner the better....

However, they are all manner of prices and money is slightly tight right now.

Island 4x4 have one for 94 pounds plus vat, but some of the google reviews say they have shocking after sales service or some parts are shonky...

Any advice before I part with the governments pittance (I'm lucky my wife is supplying me some pennies since it seems people have to live for a month on 183 quid :eek:o_O).

I can't wait to get my arm fixed and get back to work

I'm guessing you have an l322, after my gearbox was reconditioned I was recommended an aftermarket cooler and not to use the OEM one. Mine is mounted onto the front of the rad, so far so good with no issues

All the stuff I have bought from Island has been good so far (touch wood) as long as you dont want to email or call them for anything

Nope, sorry she's a 38...Thought everyone knew George :p

Aye, Oakey, that seems to be the bone of contention, after sales service or lack thereof

I'll keep looking coz I can't afford to get a pup then have the car off the road while I can't get through

Phoning island is a no no but I've always had replies to email queries pretty quickly (within 24hrs) and everything I've bought has arrived very quickly.
Even had lots of parts delivered to Czech Republic which is often hit and miss but no problem with them.
I think they do get some bad press on here and I'm not convinced it is justified.
I think the problem with researching suppliers via a forum is that most people only post a comment when something goes wrong which can happen with any business.

Have you not looked for a s/h unit? Got one off fleabay with pipes for forty squid about 2 years ago and been OK touch wood. Probably start leaking now I've said that

Talk to your local parts place. You might be surprised. Rimmers service is excellent but the price is high. PaddockSpares might be worth a gander but tends to be Sh!tpart.

I used Island all the time, right up until I had to return something. Never again.

i always use brit-car, quick service, several makes of part to choose from and always good customer service. i usually find them ver reasonably priced too.

I have usad Island a lot and have had no problem with them at all and had to return some parts and not had any quibbles with refund or replacement parts .

I hate so say but for once the britpart cooler is pretty good quality. I'm guessing this is the one for £94 +vat (about what i paid for mine). Island can be hit & miss with parts quailty & rectification in my experience.

I went onto Britpart site, but couldn't for the life of me find anything relating to cooling or gearbox cooling...unless anyone knows better?

The problem with being up here is no one seems to have much ability to repair or supply at a decent price... The nearest seems to be Glasgow.

Have you got the part number?

I use lrdirect for a lot of stuff as you get a choice in suppliers.

Cheers

Bear in mind I have been told the threads on the pipes get messed up on removal so I opted for the second hand with pipes option from a breaker for £50

+1 on the connections getting messed up when removing. Hit them with some penetrating fluid before removing otherwise you'll strip the threads.

Agree about the threads... Plenty experience.

The other day, on a certain French car, I had to remove brake pipes from the balancing valve.

Due to it's location it gets plenty rusty. Anyway, the easiest way to do away with rusty pipes is the easy way.

I have a tiny blow torch which I used to heat up the 11mm nut in question, then I snipped off the offending pipe right at the nut & offered up my 1/4 ratchet & socket and it came off a treat...

Back to the cooler, it's not leaking so badly yet, it's just dripping out. But I have no doubt it will either get slowly worse or go in a sudden and grand style

That part number is for the diesel

So, being somewhat tight, I am searching still and have found this:

https://www.lrdirect.com/ESR2276-Oil-Cooler-Transmission-New-Rr-4/?keep_https=yes

Now not only is the 1st one cheapest on there, but it comes with 2yr warranty whereas the others come with only one year warranty!

Can this be true? How so cheap AND have twice the warranty of the OEM stuff??

I have wife's credit card (by her full permission) and am ready to "add to cart" so should I or shouldn't I?

Should you choose to accept the mission. You have ten minutes. This message will self implode :p
