6 months ago I painted the radius arms, rear suspension arms, etc with Hammerite and by the look of things need doing again. So I plan to remove them (replacing bushes at the same time), wire brush back to metal and clean with white spirit.

This time I will prime the metal but with what. From what I have read etch primer is for non ferrous metal, and is used for aluminium, galvanised metal, etc. I don't want to paint with red oxide as I would rather spray so is my only option zinc oxide primer? Is this the correct primer to use before applying paint?

What have other people used?

I managed to get some re bushed ones on e bay last year, I gave them a fettling with the wire brush on the angle grinder then cleaned them down with thinners and painted with this:

Still look OK,
I have given up on hammerite it is hard to apply and seems to give the same protection as condensed milk

Etch is good on steel as well. Red oxide is fine too, but get a better quality one, like Corroless or similar. The cheapies are rubbish nowadays.
I don't know much about spraying, but I don't see why you cant spray red oxide, you may need to thin it a bit.
Nor surprised you had issues with Hammerite, I don't think it has been any good for the last twenty years.

Only the cheap stuff you buy in shops. Still possible to get good stuff if you order off the net or go to a specialist. The clue is often in the price. If you aren't paying 80 quid plus for five litres, it wont be any good.

Would the POR-15 zinc rich primer be better bet, if you only needed a small amount or were short of funds ?

Doubt it. Zinc rich is only any good if it is at least 90% zinc. Genuine Galvafroid is about 65 quid a litre IIRC!

I was wrong. Genuine galvafroid is probably about 50 quid a litre.
Out of curiosity, I went over to the shed, and got a tin of Teamac zinc rich. £35.27 plus VAT.

I would agree with Turboman, Corroless is the dogs danglies.
Not sure if it would be sprayable mind as their primer is quite thick, but personally I would get yer brush out (as much as you obviously don't want to) and use something that will actually last the test of time.

Corroless is a nice paint, you would be too young to remember, but it is like going back forty years in the way it goes on, and stays on.

I think it can be thinned with white spirit for spraying, brush works well fer me!

Next time I do mine, which probably won't be long, I'm following Aaron's example and getting them galvanised.

Yup agree with you on the red oxide. Expensive ones have a very high zinc content, cheapies hardly any.
