Hey all, I'm new to the freelander and am unsure on which one to buy, I want a freelander 2 but can't justify that amount on one so leaves me under 2007 cars. I have noticed they all have very different prices.

So....

Diesel or petrol??
Petrol 1.8 or 2.5v6
Common things to look for
Conmin faults?

Thanks in advance

Ive have a Freelander 2.0TD from 99' and im quite happy with it..Bought it 3 weeks ago and have fixed the "minor" issues and even tuned it a bit. Cheap car, easy to fix if it breaks down. Go for diesel and not a 1.8 petrol!

Common faults, everything. You got to have some tools when buying a LR.

Common issues with LR FL:
VCU locked up, could break IRD or diff. The VCU cost pretty much in Norway at least, and you better have the she1t in front of and behind of the IRD(forgot what its called in English)..

IRD could break even if VCU is ok. Same with diff.

Poor "head" gasket on the engine causing coolant loss.

El.problems on central locking, or doors/windows in general.

Poor door gaskets. Soaked interior trim.

EGR clogging up (easy fix tho..) Blank/blocked mine today actually with a ~1mm home made shim. Going to clean inlet this weekend.

Etc.. You got to have some passion about the car. If you love to use your hands you'll love the car :p

Btw, my first post.. Im from Norway .. So excuse my poor English since it's a bit rusty (like my Diesel-tank protector/holder(?))

Personal choice. The 1.8 has a reputation for popping head gaskets but they can be repaired cheaply. The 2.5 V6 has hot hatch pace, the best engine note and the smoothest power delivery, it's also the quietest inside. It's my choice ;)
The down side is if something goes wrong with it's cooling system, like a 50pence O ring sealing the thermostat, the coolant can leak out un-noticed causing a low water level. This will cause HGF very quickly!! Oh and it does around 20 mpg !!
Both the diesel engine options are favoured by many folks as they are generally niggle free. The VCU can cause all sorts of transmission failures on all engine options. I am 1 of many who consider the VCU as a service part and as such should be changed at 60,000 to 70,000 mile intervals.

has to be only a diesel.
l-series is cheaper, easier to work on and reliable. td4 is more expensive and more complicated but quicker.
i would opt for the l-series.
