Looks like I may end up having to do a 50 mile round trip to work every day soon. I currently have a 300tdi automatic Disco. I'm thinking that I won't be abkle to afford to run it so looking for a cheaper option is a series diesel better on fuel or would I be better looking for a disco/rangie on lpg if I change the car I will have around £1000 - £1200 to spend so a freelander diesel will probably be out of the question.

Any ideas/suggestions

Thanks

Veg oil is the way to go. Don't think a series diesel will be any better, they are slow noisy lumps and only do mid to low 20s in the mpg department, TDI is much more efficent on diesel and much more powerful.

Think that a 300tdi Disco is prob the cheapest to run. You may get more mpg from a manual rather than auto, but not vastly more.
Unless you`re feeling lucky, don`t go anywhere near a Rangie at the lower price range: there are loads of money pits and just a few good `uns.

either stick with with the 300tdi and try to drive economically or swap to a pug 306 or megane diesel to aim for 50 plus mpg . really depends on whether you need the size and off road/towing capabilities of the disco or just need a car to commute .

My 110 with a 200 Tdi returns 30mpg (when it's working correctly...), whereas my brother's Series III 88", with the 2.25 N/A, only gives him around 21-22mpg.

An LPG'd V8 will cost you at least as much as a Tdi to run, and probably more...
We discussed the LPG vs Diesel debate in some detail in this thread.

Yeah, keep the landy for really bad weather days and buy something small, cheap and economical.
