Been searching around and can't seem to find the exact answer, so here goes. Which oil do I need for my discovery 1995 (m) 300tdi for the gearbox and also which oil for the diffs? thanks.

EP80-90 to GL 4 or 5 for diffs and transfer box. You'll need 6 ltrs

Dexron III atf or MTF94 - you'll need 3ltrs. Dexron is autobox fluid and readily available at a modest price, MTF is LR recommended, expensive and can be difficult to locate.

Regular oil changes are the key to success, so using cheaper oil but changing more often is the way to go. Change the oil much more often than LR recommends - cheap protection.

too thick baulk rings have to strip oil froim gear cone to work ,gear oil is too thick for design of rings plus oil pump wouldnt like it ,

Changing all the fluids in mine has made a huge difference, the guy who sold it me said it had recently been 'fully serviced'..however the front diff was mainly filled with water, the rear had some strange coloured liquid come out and the transfer box, well that didn't seem to have anything in!

As already said, ep90 for the diffs/transfer box and I used MTF 94 from the dealer for the gearbox (not too bad a price considering the dealership was more like a 5 star hotel lobby). Most if not all of my strange crunches/grinds/rattles/weird noises have gone, so well worth doing.

Don't forgot you'll also need a 32mm spanner and a torx t55 socket.

Mine too. I topped mine up, 500mm needed in the transfer box and less than 300ml in the gearbox, the diffs were OK. It's like a different car, amazing, like you say "well worth doing".

I'll be doing the full fluid/filter change in a month or so as i'm coming up to a 5000 milestone. It all looks all very easy and simple to get at, all of my filler/drain plugs are free, I have a large syringe ready to fill the oil into the gear and transfer boxes, my local tip will take old oil. Sorted.
