Hi all, I am having an issue with my 99 Td5. It's making a God awful noise from what seems to be the clutch/gearbox area. It's a rumble/rattle that is there pretty much all of the time, apart from when I press the clutch pedal. I know that the release bearing is a common problem for the Td5, as is the DMF, but I'm starting to think my problem might be more gearbox based, such as the input or layshaft bearing.

Has anyone got a easy way to help diagnose the problem, or is it a matter of taking the box out and seeing what I see?

Thanks in advance!

Input/first motion shaft bearing or layshaft bearings failed or failing, noise stops when clutch is depressed because input shaft is no longer driven. If it was the release bearing noise should increase with the clutch depressed.
