This is probably a bit of a stupid question but I don't know much about these engines.

I have a 1989 land rover 90 truck that I bought a few weeks ago. It has a snorkle fitted to the 300tdi engine and I wondered where my air filter will be?

I took this picture which shows the snorkle connection (blue hose) which is connected to where i thought the air filter housing hose would be.

Does it have a largish black tubular shaped object on the other side ( drives side ) of the engine bay , that the snorkel is connected to?

Sounds like you might have a combined snorkel. Is the top mushroom shaped?

If the blue hose goes straight into the snorkel then you have no air filter
I assume snorkel is on the passenger side?

I can't see the snorkle connecting to anything else.
It looks like it connects straight in and yes it's on the passenger side
If there is no filter

That doesn't look like a combined filter/snorkel. Some bodger has taken the filter out! Never a good idea to have no filter, best get it sorted. Major damage is unlikely if she runs alright.

What's the best way of sorting fitting a filter? Can you fit one in the snorkle?
Yeah it marks its territory. I think it's the rear engine seal. Not something I can do and been quoted 250-300 to get it done.

I don't think you can fit one to your type of snorkel ( not 100% about this ). You can sometimes fit cone filters to the mushroom-topped snorkels. You're better off re-fitting the airbox ( which houses the filter ). You'll need some more pipe and connections. Find some pics of TDi engine bays to see how it should be fitted.

Ok thanks.
I'm going to take the snorkel apart this weekend so I'll have a look to see if there's anything there.
I took it into a landy specialist garage when I bought it and they gave me a long list of things that needed doing but the air filter was never mentioned.

Am I right in thinking that's a 300 tdi conversion? Fitting airboxes to conversions is a bit tricky sometimes due to lack of space. But it can ( and should ) be done. You may need to be a bit more creative!

Yeah it's a 300tdi conversion fitted with a lt77 gearbox so it sits quite a way back and there's loads of room on the drivers side.
I'll have to have a look and see if I can figure something out. Does it matter if I have to fit some extension hoses and route it round to the drivers side? Would the additional length have an impact?

If I were you, I wouldn't be running that engine. If you are going to I would check that there is some sort of basic filtering system in that snorkel. It looks like it's piped directly in to the turbo

If it's not already in a bad way, it stands a good chance of getting there soon and it'll cost a lot more money than your leaking seal. You have a big gap between the brake servo and the cylinder head, that's where your air filter box should be. On your picture I can't see the bracket that the filter box bolts to. I've got some pictures of my engine bay, I'll upload them to photobucket and stick them on here for you.
Should have said pushing dirty air through your engine will soon goose it too! Not just your turbo.

What I don't understand is why the garage never mentioned anything about the lack of air filter? They gave it a full going over or so I'm told and they are landy specialists. I also bought it from the guy who owns Yorkshire Landrover.

Maybe it has some form of filter in it then and you are ok. Fingers crossed.
Here are a few pictures to show a standard 300Tdi set up
This isn't a great picture because the wings are missing and so things like the expansion tank are sat on top of the engine where they shouldn't be. The air filter 'box' is the black round cylinder to the right of the brake servo.

Here is a close up view of it.

It sits on a bracket that bolts to the side of the cylinder head/engine block.
This is a close up of that bracket. The air box is held by two metal straps, you can see both straps and one of the locking clips in the pic above. The straps are held on the bracket via four rubber mounting blocks. Three of mine were split through, so you can see the snapped surface on them. The one at the top is still in one piece.

Have a butcher's in the snorkel for a filter before anything else. Routing it from the driver's side will have no negative impact at all.

Also, do a search on cyclone breather pipe - in the picture yours is missing. Probably because there is no airbox to run it from the cyclone breather. It's not a massive issue but I would be concerned about getting fumes into the cab from it and the implications of it not being watertight - it's pretty high up though

So I managed to find some time to take the snorkel off today and as expected there is no sight of anything like an air filter, it's just piped straight to the turbo.

While it was off, I got a picture inside the turbo, the blades seem damaged, what do you lot think? Is it OK?

I'm going to order some 75mm flexi pipes and an air filter as well as the cyclone breather connection so I can sort all that out next weekend. In the meantime I've rigged up a makeshift filter in the snorkel.
