in light of recent events which we will not go to far into, i need to buy a towing strop. i like the flat ones as there easier too store. where is a good place to buy one and what is the recommended length.

Go to Machine Mart and Buy a 2 tonne rated lifting strop. They have a 7:1 safety factor built in so 2 tonnes have a breaking strain of 14tonnes. and get the longest you can afford. But don't buy your shackles from there they're ****e get proper rated shackles at least 3.5 tonnes SWL. get em from a lifting/Crane company. HSS will sell you em as well but not sure what they're prices are like.
 
Then fit something to the frunt of your motor to fix a shackle to. You can usually fix a shackle over the knob (que sniggers?) of your rear tow bar, but you'll still need a front recovery point.

I carry a few strops of different lengths (4 I think) & a bunch of good shackles. You can link them together & use them for allsorts of stuff.

Funny, I've only ever used them fer oiking other people out of problems. :rolleyes:
 
i have a steering guard i will be fitting tomoro fingers crossed. is it not advisable to fit recovery points to the standard front bumper as its too thin. i know you lot got pretty mad about the whole rescue thing but im trying to correct the errors of my ways by buying the appropriate kit
 
Hmm, you'll probably find if you fit the steering guard you then won't be able to fit Jate rings, unless it's specially designed to take them too, so dunno!

Nope, standard bumper's no good. ;)

Can't ye buy/ fabricate summit tae fit on the top bumper mounts where it bolts to the chassis?

Haven't looked right through their site but most of their stuff is towing straps. Not to be mistaken for recovery straps which are an entirely different matter. Towing straps are just that towing straps for on road use and should never be used for recovery of a stuck vehicle.

GJ Whatever you buy make sure it is a proper rated lifting strap not a towing strap. or rope.

ideally should go for something more robust imo like

Webbing Lifting Sling Strop 50mm Wide Duplex 2ton 10mtr on eBay, also Other Lifting Tools, Lifting Tools, Industrial Tools, Business, Office Industrial (end time 20-Sep-08 11:01:27 BST)

the one you've got will be alright in most cases but only has a breakstrain of 5t whereas the latter has 14t. Unfortunately the heavier duty strops are expensive and I'm sure the one you've got will see you through most situations.

Note it says rated and has a test certificate. But these are a bit pricey espeshilly with the postage. If you bought sommat like this

Like the side note about never having had to use it for yourself grippa! See as is quite apparent, although I might have fair vehicle knowledge, I've never hactually done any offroading / laning myself, need a good way to find out how to do it properly so that when I get melandee I don't repeat what we did today! Going out with grippa a few times has been good actually, shown me a few things definately, and I think that's probably the best way to learn!

Aye as long as your not buried to your axles in mud.
What ever you do, Don't allow anyone pulling you out to try and snatch you out of the mud with it. It will almost certainly snap if you do. Only apply steady pressure to it. Also NEVER tie a knot in it. A knot can half the breaking strain of a strap.
