I have a '99 Freelander Xei 1.8 petrol :- it has recently begun to fail to start (car unlocks OK, lights come on on ignition, but no starter) - at least, not start until several attempts of key-turning have been tried, interspersed with banging ondash and loud swearing - so far, after several or a dozen attempts, it eventually starts.

I have had the starter out, replaced it with a old-but-known-to-work one and the symptoms remain. And yes indeed, I have ensured all contacts are clean and secure and well WD40'd to boot.

In addition, I bench-tested both starters and they both whirred away merrily.

So now, having browsed the forum I'm looking at the immobiliser circuitry - but I can't find the immobiliser ECU itself, which RAVE assures me is in the centre of the fascia somewhere :- I've taken the central console out :- nothing there, just a nice blank wall behind the radio area. I've taken off the instrument binnacle :- well, there's the alarm transmitter/receiver unit and the circular bit around the keyhole.. but where is my ECU?

Can anyone help with detailed instructions on where it is, what colour it is and what size it is - and even more details on how to get at the brute? Then I can see if there is anything obviously wrong with it before I give up and take it to our hopelessly expensive Landrover dealer (who has never ever managed to fix the sun-roof properly)

Many thanks for any help... but someone, please help!

Bill

I think its down near the internal fuse box...but before you do anything have you tried unlocking and locking from the fob a few times?
I think this has been covered on some other threads so have a looky..
But try the fob first, that worked on mine..oh and if you have a spare try that one as well.
Hope this helps

Where is my immobiliser ECU?..............at the main dealers, wiv the rest of yer motor?

Ha Ha F**king Ha!

But I suspect you might be right - I don't think I can take this much further without the diagnostic computer thingy Landrover use giving out some clues as to what's wrong (and how much it'll cost!)
