My 90 was stolen this week and everyone tells me the vehicle will be dismantled. There were a couple of distinctive pieces and I am looking at ebay and gumtree. But if I wanted to buy them locally where would I go? I'm a bit naieve about these things, never having dealt with the backs of lorries and suchlike :)

I think if you have pictures of the items you recognise as your own with receipt and record of police details of the stolen car. You could contact the eBay and gum tree and inform them the seller has stolen property. Then recontact the police of the details and what action they can advise you take.

It's worth a nose on preloved.co.uk as well. Keep looking out for what you know are your parts, a mate had his custom painted Suzuki TL1000R stolen a few years ago, about a month later a breaker on ebay was trying to sell it in parts, it wasn't just the police that visited him....

Put adverts on Facebook. Don't be totally specific but just ask if anyone has any going. Word travels fast.

Look for deals that are too good to be true, they will be.

And don't expect all the sellers, or buyers of such parts to be repentant when challenged. There was a chap posted up on here the other day who was informed that he very likely had a stolen engine.
Instead of reporting it, and the seller, he expressed delight that he would be able to export the vehicle, as it had been illegally stamped with another engine number. :(

Parts from stolen landies get sold through all the usual channels as mentioned previously. If your Landy gets stolen, circulate details widely. Make the parts as difficult to sell on as possible. If you do see what you believe are your parts or vehicle being sold online, get screenshots of the ad with the URL so that if the ad is removed or the parts are sold, it will help with any prosecution. Report it to the police. It might identify the thief or another person who is handling stolen goods, or in this case, parts of your and other stolen landies.

The police used to go the the Newbury sale and forum their large 4x4 spares days, which helped make it difficult to sell on nicked gear at these events. However, with the increase in online activity, most parts are likely being sold there unless stolen to order.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions of the seller about any second hand parts. A genuine seller should know the source and history unlike a tea-leaf who likely won’t or will get funny about it.

Less than half of all stolen cars recovered by police

Auto Express investigation reveals just 45.31 per cent of stolen cars are recovered by police, with detection dates at five-year low

Fewer than half the vehicles stolen in the UK have been recorded as recovered by police over the past decade, Auto Express can exclusively reveal.

A series of freedom of information requests to the UK’s police forces shows officers logged a total of 522,214 stolen vehicles between 2009 and 2018, but only marked 236,636 as recovered.

With an average stolen-to-recovered ratio of 45.31 per cent over the past 10 years, some forces are leagues ahead of ahead of others in their posted results. Merseyside police, for example, recorded 35,624 stolen vehicles from 2009 to 2018 and marked 26,816 as recovered, giving a recovery rate of 75.27 per cent. West Midlands police, in contrast, recorded 73,644 stolen cars over the same period yet logged only 8,643 as recovered, giving an 11.73 per cent recovery rate.

Trends over time
Looking at recovery rates over the last decade paints a concerning picture. Just as we exclusively revealed back in November that car thefts reached a six-year high in 2017, recovery rates are declining as police battle cuts to their numbers that have seen over 20,000 officers lost since 2010.

In 2017, for example, (the last year for which we have complete data), the forces that responded to our requests posted a recovery rate of 46.46% - the lowest ratio since 2012.

Data inconsistencies
These statistics provide valuable insight into recovery rates across the years, but they should be treated with caution. Some police forces, for example, provided information for cars, while others gave data for vehicles, meaning their numbers relate to stolen motorbikes, vans, lorries and, in one instance, a stolen and subsequently recovered aeroplane.

What’s more, when responding to our requests, many constabularies told us their records are known to contain inaccuracies.

Andrew White, assistant chief officer for Lincolnshire Police (3,630 stolen cars, 629 recovered, 17.33% recovery rate) explained his force’s data by saying: “We do not believe the figures accurately represent the vehicles that have been recovered and we will be working on our processes to gain a true reflection.”

My grandad was telling me back in the 60s/70s someone where I live was nicking blinged out mopeds in Brighton and painting selling them over our way.
