I want to nip out today and buy a good tow rope (not order online and wait days n days for delvery) as they reckon a lot more snow is on the way , just wondered where i can get a decent one from a national type place ? want something a bit better than a crappy halfords type thats ok for car to car emergency towing, but want a longer decent rope capable of pulling a truck out of a stuck type situation, not for towing a small car all the way home

machine mart has a 4.5 meter 2 tonne for £10 , but want a bit better ideally ?

Visit ebay loads there and you will get in a few days or find a rope manufacture/supplied near you and buy a length and then eye splice each end, if you know how to splice that is :)
 
theres a chandlery down the road ? but i dont know to splice etc, just want something to keep in the boot for emergency tow situations/help a mate out etc, rather than have nothing at all, and disco witha tow bar..but nothing to tow with :rolleyes:

might just go machine mart and get that one,cheap enough

what sort of shackles ? ones like this ? and how many just 2 ?

I got an elasticated one from Halfords, before I had a Landy, to tow my old Mk II Jag whenever it broke down. I've used it to pull out nine or ten people in the last few weeks.

I also used it to get towed out in my Disco on the back of a Mitsubishi L200 last Wednesday, when I got stuck in snow after shooting on a remote Yorkshire lodge.

It only cost about £30 as I recall.

20ft may be a bit to long for towing but for recovery maybe just right and just under £11 on eBay 140401985579
 
Your best bet is probably go to marine chandlers, get some 24mm 3 strand nylon rope. You'll probably want a 2.0m bridle, a 4.5m tow rope and an 8m tow rope. I'm sure if you ask, a chandler will eye splice the ropes for you. For shckles, well the choice is quite large but bear in mind for recovering properly stuck 4x4's you'll need to make sure the shackles and ropes have good load capacity. Also consider that if you are going to go out to tow other vehicles you have some small shackles 'coz standard towing eyes are too small for land rover sized ropes and shackles.


I'm not a fan of kinetic ropes and prefer a good 3 strand rope to a strop but that's just me.

i agree with kevs completely, the problem with straps is they have no give, a rope is a bit stretchy so might avoid ripping a saxo towing eye off, which will then end up through your back window and head. perhaps.

i have straps and rope, and straps are good for brute force winching, generalyy destroying, and giving someone a good tug outa mud with very good recovery points - but for road towing its 24mm rope every time :)
 
JUst have a look in your yellow pages look ofr a local Lifting Gear company, and give them a call, there must be some rigging companys around your way as well.

I have some HUNDREDS of 15 foot lengths of polypropylene three strand ropes that measure about 90mm around using a tape.

I carry several in the Disco, usually two 15 footers and one double-length job.

I splice small eyes on both ends, and use a D-Shackle on the victim end, just dropping the eye over my tow-ball.

I will part with these ropes for £1 each plus post.

If anyone wants to organise something, I could send a huge box down full of them.

Lifting ropes/straps are different to tow or recovery ropes/straps. They're designed to handle different stresses. Recovery ropes/straps have to cope with kinetic forces, where as lifting ropes/straps don't.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:.... I take it your a lifting gear and towing gear speicalist in your field.........
