When I press the brake pedal the light in the heated rear window switch comes on (dimly).

I suspect this has something to do with my car no longer wishing to communicate with the garages diagnostic machine and my abs light being permanently on.

I am making the assumption I have an earth issue some place

1996 discovery TDi auto (fly by wire) Japanese import.

Previous work carried out attempting to extinguish abs light.
New abs sensor osf (indicated by the diagnostic machine before it stopped communicating)

New brake light switch (genuine land rover very expensive) as indicated by the flashing light method.

Front bearings / movement all checked and found ok.

All thoughts and solutions gratefully received.

Your assumption is possibly correct.
Both the o/s brake light and the HRW pick up their earth connection at the rear of the rear o/s lamp unit also if you have a trailer light socket on a tow bar then thats worth a look at.
