My td5 90 has just collapsed a wheel bearing with lots of play and a nice howling noise to match. None of the local parts places open on a Saturday morning anymore (and they wonder why no-one uses them and the internet is winning!). I have several of the older version tdi wheel bearing kits on the shelf is there any difference between these kits other than the lock washer and stake nut? most importantly are the bearings the same?
I understand I can replace the stake nut for the two locking nuts similar to the older style and that the locking ring is a slightly different design but I need the vehicle over the weekend so cannot wait until Monday for parts?
 
For sure I don't know, but logic tells me the bearings are the same, why would they change the hubs-n-stubs ?

You are correct after some digging around I found a later parts manual that had the td5 bearings in and they are the same part number. I also found some forum threads about swapping the stake nut for the old fashioned double nut and lock tab so I have done that as well as I had them on the shelf rather than trying to reuse the stake nut. So wheel bearing is done, now back to running brake lines on the 110!
 
Presumably the TD5 is the same as the Puma? My mate has a 60 plate and his has the stake nut. Very easy to do because you just tighten to the required torque and then tap the nut flange over. No tightening to required torque, turning back 1/4 turn, exposing your right shin and left breast carry on. :)

No, not the same. The Puma adjustment is set by use of a selective fit spacer. I'll see if I can dig out the workshop sheet and post it
 
Compare to TD5 type to see if mods are feasible ----

isn't that the same as the td5? From the research I did (very brief) to see if the bearings were the same there were several forum threads about converting back to the old tdi wheel bearing style as you can then adjust the bearings far more easily as they wear rather than needing to use different spacers and trial an error to get the correct one..

Might just be because I am used to it but using the two locking nuts is not difficult, and I don't do it to a set torque (don't know anyone who does) you do it by feel. Fully tighten down to seat the bearings, fully slacken off and then tighten by feel to get the correct preload on the bearings. And you don't need a very expensive over sized torque wrench to get to 240Nm.

I do it my feel too, to be honest. :)
A couple of years since I did my mates 60 plate. I just remember how much easier it was.
