Forgive my numptyness, Im on first first Landy.
Whats this thing, which I found on the drivers side behind the trim...

Looks like an after market electrical item. Depending on what Defender you have could be a few things..... Cruise control / Audio / camera / Central locking / alarm. I'm sure someone will be able to ID it.

Try unplugging it and see what stops working!!!

It's in 2002 TD5, wire coming out the bottom could be an antenna?

I don't think that is a standard part of that vehicle.
Wondering about an aftermarket central locking system? Or something else of that nature.Maybe a satellite or radio tracker.
I would try what he suggested^^^^^^^. Unplug the connector in the top, see if anything changes.
 
Looks like central locking thing to me. The wire hanging is the antenna for the remote.

Central locking is a good bet for a Td5 as suggested by all. Does your have CLing?, pull the aerial cable and see if it the CL remote operating distance gets shorter - making sure you can unlock without it manually first of course.
